BTW, is this the one that is going to be built in the former Yugo plant, or am I thinking of a different product? I know Chrysler has one coming, but I can't remember which car it is.
What? Fiats are some of some of the most reliable cars in Europe and get lots of reliability awards. The Platform is a version of a Fiat platform, but is wider and longer and specific to the US. It will be built in Il here is the US beside the Patriot and Compass. While it will have the Fiat 1.4 Turbo, it will also have updated "tiger shark" 2.0 and 2.4 versions of the world engine, which I can say from experience, is one hell of a solid motor and the new updates such as direct injection should really make it even better. As for the Yugo plant, i believe it is going to be making Fiats for other countries, India maybe? It has of course been completely renovated and updated so it is hardly like they will be using the same equipment that Yugo used 30 years ago.

As for the people saying Dodge is about dead, look around. the cars they have been able to really redesign, the Charger and Durango, are amazing and top of their class models. The Avenger, while signifigantly updated is just that to carry over until the truly competitive replacement hits in a year of so. The Dart looks like it will simply be a hit. they will finally have the efficiency to be competitive if this ever hotter growing segment, and the looks and performance to really stand out.

As for diluting the Charger and Dart names, impala, Malibu, HHR SS, etc, etc. At least this charger is the best performaing Charger ever, it is still RWD, still offers Honking V8s, and still has aggressive and unique looks. 4 doors be damned it is truly a worthy succesor to the Charger name.

Really dont see why some of you think Dodge will go away. When I think chrysler I think Dodge, not the other way around.

I have to agree, I mean the Impala and Malibu are pretty diluted as well from a historical perspective. IMHO, I think the Impala going FWD is worse than the Charger going to a 4-door. The Impala doesn't even have a V8 SS option anymore If it wasn't for the Camaro and Corvette I wouldn't have a whole lot of enthusiasm for the Chevy line in its current form. I would love to have a relatively inexpensive performance sedan as my daily driver like the Pontiac G8. GM axing Pontiac was a sad day for me, and the G8 was an awesome sedan, and a clear Dodge Charger competitor. Even the Pontiac Solstice was a pretty cool sports car especially the GXP model.

I'm interested in the Dart as a legitimate replacement for the skittle... I mean Neon, especialy if there is an SRT model later on. But I'll be interested in it from a distance, because it isn't a car I would actually buy. It is too small for what I need right now unfortunately.

Believe me I'm far from a chevy fanboy. Besides impalas in general have always been a full sized family car. So what's your point? They didn't make a four door charger back in the day, and the dart wasn't a rice burner ,grape burner, or whatever that thing is they are trying to call a dart.

The Dart will be built in Belvidere, IL So that's some good news. It looks nice for a compact car. Off topic, but I wish there'd be some AWD compacts available from the big 3... The Germans all make AWD compacts, why can't the US manufacturers?

"Most reliable in Europe" is a little like getting the best hooker on the corner. Sure, you got a better ride than others, but it's not something to brag about.

And speaking of lowering the bar, isn't the 2.0/2.4 a Hyundai/Mitsubishi engine?

From what I've heard, something coming out of the plant will be badged as either a Dodge or Jeep or both, and is coming to the US. And I'm sure they have updated the plant, so I guess if you don't mind having stuff on the lot that came from Serbia.....

The top of Chrysler's product line as always been a bright spot. Their problem is with the mid-size and below. The last time they were competitive in those segments, the Taurus with its 145hp Vulcan V6 was the hottest car in America. I'm not saying the new Fiat based cars will definitely fail, but I am skeptical that Chrysler can right that 20 year ship using re-badged cars from a company that has never been able to sell in the US.

It would make better sense to name this little car a Dodge Omni.
