Explain this to me - old toolbox

So, I'm cleaning up and painting my Craftsman toolbox from the mid '70's so that it will look decent on top of my new tool chest

The smaller drawers looked fairly decent and I planned on only polishing the aluminum pulls and painting the exposed face of the drawers

So, I decide to throw them in the dishwasher to knockoff some of the dirt. Mind you this is just the 6" x 12" deep little drawers shown below

So, explain why all the paint, every bit disappeared. No odor, no smoke no evidence in the dishwasher.

Yes, that's perfectly bare metal with some rust already.

On a Craftman toolbox from the 70's. I've wiped that thing down with acetone before to get paint overspray off..

All I can figure is some weird reaction with the detergent. Cascade powder I think

it'll take the paint off your tool box, but it won't take the food off your dishes... go figure . Ohh, and rust happens quick

A dish washer may go through extreme temp changes quicker then the paint could keep up with the metal.

For those of you laying awake thinking about this thread, I believe I have part of the answer. Looking at the larger drawers that I did not wash, it seems that the drawers are not actually painted. They apparently are anodized or "blued" like a gun barrel. They are a very dark grey color, but on close inspection you really cannnot detect any thickness to the coating.

Additionally, I had done some sample rattle can swatches for color match on the bottom of one of the drawers. That paint was not even touched.

So, case closed. Some sort or reaction with the detergent or simple temperature thing. But it did not actually strip paint.
