Sigs are top of the line weapon like it's been said go with a 40 with a picatinny rail for flashlight/lasersight mount for home defence. I was looking around the other night at the sigs. www.sigsauer.com. I'm in the process of getting a new set of trigger springs for a 38 S&W revolver because girlfrieng can't pull the trigger or a slide back on any of my guns. First thing to do is a gun safety course, they lay out the ins and outs of gun safety, shooting someone thats in your house ,etc common sense mostly but you lern a lot about the law, and the rights of the guy robbing you ? go figure

So another question- mainly for service people. 45 or 9mm or something else?

That really comes down to your personal preference. I'm a pretty good shot with a pistol so I like a 9 mil I can shoot to knock someone down or I can shoot to stop... forever.

But if you want to knock em down regardless of how good a shot you are then the 45 is gonna do the job.

Edit: I was a small arms instructor in the Navy.

Something to note, You'd be surprised how many people miss from inside 20ft to the target. I'd most certainly take a class.

My pistol is an H&K 45. It's a great gun, so is the Sig, Glock, Kimber, etc.

If you don't have experience with firearms, a double action revolver may be a good choice.

But really, I don't think anything tops a shotgun. Get a 20 gauge for your wife (really even a 410 works for home defense). A Mossberg Cruiser or equivalent is such a solid reliable weapon with awesome stopping power and low overpenetration as long as you stay away from slugs/sabots.

(listen to GTAHVIT btw- you'd be amazed at the miss rate. Even trained people miss alot in panic situations)

the targets from the bootcamp qualifier you'd swear they were shooting from at least 50 yrds lol.

For home/personal defense, i'd suggest larger caliber like a .40 or .45 (or even shotgun like someone said)

in california to get a CCW permit you pretty much have to have court paperwork of restraining orders or something to PROVE that someone would want you dead, and having a higher caliber gun on the permit application improves your odds because of their 'stopping power' (who uses a silenced baretta 9mm for self defense? lol)

I carry a Glock 26 with hollow points. Best of both worlds. It's compact and the bullet stays INSIDE your intended target.

even a 9mm hollow point might go straight through because they are so screaming fast. especially +P ammo. Slower heavier .45 or 40 would be best. Kimber ultra carry II, compact, .45 but a good kick. Couldn't afford that so I got a Taurus PT1911 instead. Great gun for half the price just not so compact.

Next thing I hear is this guy empty his weapon and never hit the paper/nadda. I did what anybody else would do, I left. I laughed about that for days ''Aim Center mass"
