A damn shame

This is a story of abuse and neglect of a 96 Camaro V6 RS convertible. This car belongs to a guy who just moved into my appartment complex about a month ago. I've had several chances to examine this RS since he parks two spots over from my second car. The pictures don't do this justice there are dents all over the place, the paint is dry rotted, interior is rotting from neglect, the wheels are dented, the tires are bald with cracks in the sidewalls but at least the convertible top is okay shape (for now). Not once has this poor Camaro been started, not even once since it arrived a month ago.

As for the owner I did get a chance to talk to him. Apparently, the car was something left over after he divorced his wife. According to him the car has 140k miles and runs great. When I asked what kind of maintence needed to be done to the car he said that he didn't know, adding that he doesn't like American cars. Also he's looking to sell this poor Camaro for for 5k, in its current state its probably worth a grand at best. Now I thought I was doing the right thing by telling this guy if he was looking for a more realistic price I might be able to help find a buyer as I am a 5th generation owner and belong to a local Camaro club. No dice, this guy insists he'll get 5k grand for this poor Camaro.

More than likely this will be a story of a car that could be a nice weekend project seeing the crusher in the next year. I know this is a V6 but the fact that its an RS and a convertible would make it a nice option for someone looking to start a Camaro collection. Its this dude's car and he can do whatever he wants with it, but as someone who dedicates the time I do into my cars this is hard to see. :(

I forgot to add that most of the dent damage on the plastic panels and not the metal. Despite the paint being past done, the metal panels no rust is apparent. This is a car that can be saved but someone (not me) needs to save it from it's owner before its too late.

Yeah...that is just sad. I would love to have that. Make my kids a nice car to work on and own when they can drive in 7 years.

The car is worth more than $1,000 dollars even in it's current state. it's worth about $3,000 in a private sale.

It's a nearly 15 year old v6. . . it's really not in that terrible of shape for what it is. People don't really do much upkeep on such cars.

Its worth about $2,675 in a private sale in fair condition, right in the ball park like you said. Even still this dude is way off base wanting $5,000 for this car. Had he started out with $2,500 and said here are the problems, I might be more willing to listen. The thing that scares me with cars like this is when the owner absolutely has no idea or cars to what is wrong with the car. Don't forget this is 140,000 miles, I'm assuming certain critical upkeep schedules were missed.

Sooo.. essentially it's a good candidate for a full strip and rebuild. Wonder how he'd react to $1000 cash?

I'm very tempted to find out. I'm thinking the Pawn Stars approach is the best bet; cash in hand my friend, cash in hand.
