Here is what I was talking about below.

The Ford Mustang is the top pick for the best sports car in "Consumer Reports'" latest auto issue. For the budget-minded, "Consumer Reports" is suggesting the Honda Fit. It was picked as the best budget car. The Toyota Prius was picked as the best "Green Car" with a fuel efficiency of 44 miles to the gallon. The Chevrolet Avalanche was chosen as the best pickup. Domestic auto sales are up. The latest numbers from GM show sales in February were up nearly 46 percent from February of 2010. The Ford Motor Company has posted an overall sales increase of 14-percent in February. Chrysler has posted a 13-percent sales increase compared to February of last year.

I stopped reading at "Consumer Reports" --

First, a Mustang is not a sports car. It's a whale of a Muscle car. A sports car is a Pontiac Solstice or a Honda S2000, or a Mazda Miata. Think "little."

I hate CR and give more credibility to just about anything else. Why? Because they have an extremely skewed rating system. Pollsters are only CR readers, many of which do not seem to be auto enthusiasts, but appliance consumers. And they rate the Camaro poorly in categories like "fuel economy" --actually, it is very fuel efficient, seeing that the LS3 is moving 3700lbs of car and making 426hp.

And the Avalanche isn't really a traditional pickup. Even if it was, I'd suspect there are better choices out there (think SVT Raptor) for a fullsize, ridiculously optioned rig.

Did you know that if you drive a Prius balls-out around a race track and have a new M5 pace it, that the M5 gets better fuel mileage? -Thanks to the guys at Top Gear for that comparison.

Sounds a bit lopsided as far as the bold stuff goes.

But, the Mustang thing isn't too hard to understand. They never stopped making them.

Don't even bother listening to Consumer Reports when it comes to cars. 9 times out of 10, they have no idea what they're doing or talking about.

I can't fathom from where CR gets it's ratings. The Mustang and the Camaro are near equal in performance, quality, and driveability. The Camaro might have lost out on history, as there are no long term test results, but the two should have been near equal. The Mustang might have scored higher because it didn't have MyFord, which makes CR writers automatically list a car as Not Worthy Of A Demolition Derby. I think the Camaros biggest problem with CR is that it is not built in Japan.

The Mustang is more 'driver friendly'. It has better visibility, and the trunk opening is bigger, and so on. And those are the sort of things they evaluate every vehicle on regardless of whether it is appropriate or not.

Not really hard to understand. Ford is being dragged down by Lincoln, Chrysler was going to through a model transition on a lot of it's higher sellers (Charger, 300, 200, Avenger, Durango) so they just didn't have the vehicles on lots yet. As for the Mustang, it has do with the choices, the above reproach handling, the high quality interior, the excellent 5.0 engine. I do agree it is not actually a sports car, maybe they should have said sporty car?

Older folks tend to be the target audience of Consumer Reports. Old folks tend to lean to whatever is the most reliable vehilce in its class, not the most flashy or what is reviewed well in Motortrend.
