I understand why they rope them off. do you know how many idiots would have to climb in it and possibly damage the car?. If I were buying one I would accept none other than a flawless one. not one with scuff marks all over the thresholds from dumbasses getting in and out of it for no apparent reason other than to sit in it.

Got this from the GM website.
Interested in ordering a Volt? Please follow the five-step process below.
If you live in the United States and are interested in contacting a local Participating Volt Dealer to place an order for a Chevrolet Volt, please enter ZIP Code here: We intend to distribute to all 50 states in the next 12 to 18 months after the start of initial sales. If the Volt is not yet being distributed in your area, please provide us with your contact information, so we may send you the latest news and updates. We expect demand to exceed supply, so each dealership has been told up front the number of 2011 Model Year Volts to expect to receive. Ask your dealer if your order falls within their estimated 2011 Volt allocation. |

This isn't the first dealer to go buy a Volt in one of the first release markets...
http://www.autoblog.com/2011/01/03/v...an-show-it-of/ At least they have the foresight to get their hands on one for display long before you can buy it in the market area. Would have been nice if dealers had done this when the Camaro first came out. Most dealers that got their initial "display" Camaro had it sold before the car came off the truck.

The estimated annual fuel cost of my wifes 2010 Malibu is 1560.00 dollars. Now the cost of a Volt is what 40k or so? I paid 17k for my wifes car. So with a difference of 23k +/-. If I wouldn't have to buy one drop of gas at all for the Volt , it would take me 14.7 years to make up the differnce in cost. I understand this is purely hypothetical and based on avereages but still , I dont see the appeal to this car. It is a great car I am sure. I just dont see me buying one.

I've seen at least 10 volts with normal non dealership license plates cruising around metro detroit already. (15 or so if you include the D and M (dealer and manufacturer) plates) but the majority are customer cars already.... MI seems to be in full swing delivering volts to early order customers.

Second, and a more likely reason to buy, is the $350 per month lease payment GM is offering. Considering the equipment and the EV range, this is a verrrry good deal. Shipping to dealers now. It's already been in the news that the first owner traded in his Prius.

The official designation is "Range-Extended Electric Vehicle".
So, yes.....and no. ![]() Quote:
Supposedly, one of the main goals for the next-gen Volt (which believe it or not is just around the corner) is to make it less expensive than the model it replaces. Remember a few things before the the sticker shock sets in too deeply. Development costs for the Volt were anywhere from three to five times as much as the standard car. They've spent over a BILLION dollars developing and perfecting it. As a result, the Volt has absolutely the MOST advanced drivetrain in the entire industry. And it's also loaded to the gills....I'm actually impressed they were able to do what they did and still only set the MSRP for $40,000. EDIT: OH, and I almost forgot....if you lease (which I think it smart for this generation of EVs)...it costs no more than leasing the greatly inferior nissan leaf.
