Let's make this perfectly clear. As much as Mustang fans (this author included) would like it to be otherwise, the 2010 Shelby GT500 does not use an aluminum block. At least a couple of times over the past few weeks, there have been online reports that the cast iron block of the last generation has been ditched in favor of the lighter material. These reports are incorrect.

At the Ford preview briefing just before Christmas, we explicitly asked SVT chief engineer Jamal Hameedi if the block had changed, and he told us that it remains iron. When the aluminum rumor popped up yet again yesterday, we contacted Ford spokesman Alan Hall, who repeated the iron refrain. Whatever Ford's reasoning was for keeping the hood closed on the GT500s at the Detroit Auto Show, it is not because they were hiding an aluminum block. The reason for the iron block is that the aluminum unit from the Ford GT is designed for a dry sump lubrication system and there is nowhere to package the oil reservoir in the production Mustang.

Couldn't find nowhere to fit reservoir huh..., I wish Ford would have delayed the refresh of the mustang because If it was up to me I would have redesign the Frame ...lol everything to make that aluminum block fit

.....dry sump lubrication....

Well, when you look at the price...and then compare it to the price of similar performers (Camarocoughcough)....it's hard to take the current one seriously, imo.

Try the same thing with this pair's predecessors of 1970 or so and you'll find yourself in a bit of a wrestling match. Ain't progress wonderful? Maybe yes, and maybe sometimes it's fun to wrestle."

It weighs less than 100 lbs more than an v8 ss camaro. Ford says it weighs slightly more than 3900 lbs, but did not give the actual number. The camaro weighs 3860 lbs. They r both pigs.

I will!! Hmf!!!

The GT500 doesn't have a robust IRS and stiff-as-concrete chassis to burden it. If it did, I'll bet it'd tip the scales at over 4000lbs easy. Show me another car to the Camaro's specs that weighs more than 200lbs less. Then I'll submit that it's a "pig".

Funny story about this, their V6 actually weighs 20 lbs less than ours. Too bad it doesn't have the power to back it up.

Of course, I bet it doesn't have as sturdy a drivetrain either.

When you look at the price...and then it's faster than similar performers(Camarocoughcough),why would you not take it seriously?
Is it the handling? Yes,the Camaro will handle better, but if you're going that route, why not get a STI,it's also just as fast as a Camaro, and it wil outhandle it......because,well,when you look at the price.....and than compare it to the price of similar performers(Camarocoughcough).....it's hard to take to the Camaro seriously, because it can't fit a Dishwasher in the back like a STI could.
