guys, i'm so mad at my car right now...........................

it decided to overheat on the 60 while I was stuck in traffic trying to go to class, I tried to keep the revs up so the cooling system could keep cycling. I made it all the way to the offramp about a minute's walking distance from school when detonation started occurring and the engine shut itself off. I'm gonna have to go upgrade the cooling system right away, because this isn't the first time the motor tries to overheat on me, its just the first time its gotten so bad and I wasn't able to do anything to cool it down

Did you have your heater on full blast? That can help also.

You might just need a lower thermostat.

i've tried that before, but it usually spikes the degrees up for a good 30 seconds before it does anything, and I was too scared to see what would happen if I did it because it was already past the red

Hmm. I've never heard of turning the heater on spiking the temp - I don't see how it would. No heat would be added to the coolant, only removed...

Strange.

You don't need to upgrade it, you need to fix what's wrong with it. It could be
  • Clog in the radiator. Use a infrared thermometer gun to find out where
  • bad seal/gasket somewhere. A leak will cause air to get into the system, allowing your coolant to boil.
  • Bad water pump. Look for a moist weep-hole
  • bad thermostat
  • etc, etc, etc
What coolant are you using? Factory Dex-Cool or the green stuff?

i've already checked multiple times, nothing wrong here
  • bad thermostat
haven't had time, but this weekend I have a couple of hours off to do just that

I believe your car came from the factory with the orange stuff - Dex-Cool. Mine did. Going under that assumption:

Did you personally switch it to the green stuff? If so, did you do a full and extensive flush of the system with water BEFORE putting the green stuff in?

The green stuff is more efficient overall, but it is a silicate formula and Dex-Cool is not. If you do not completely flush the system to remove all traces of Dex, the silicate coolant will bond to the non-silicate stuff and cause clogs in your radiator. I made this mistake with my 91 Firebird.
