That supplemental system is what prevents it from being an EV in the first place. Gas engine + electric drive = hybrid. Configure it any way you like, its still a hybrid.

I'm not really sure what the motivation is to call it an EV instead of a hybrid is in the first place. Why intentionally lessen what the car is? Seems sorta like insisting on calling the Camaro a muscle car. No, its better than that. The Poius and the Insight are better cars than the Leaf or MiEV are. The Volt is better than all of them.

It's an electric vehicle IMO because you don't have to use gas if you don't want to. I could take delivery of a Volt, hoon it all over the place until the battery was dead, burn up every drop of gas in the tank, get it towed home and charged, and I would still be able to drive 25-50 miles the next day at any speed.
