The only difference between you or anyone else here and the guy writing the article is ... the guy writing the article works for R&T or whatever rag. Mags have to always do and re-do and re-do these comparisons because otherwise they're no different from Edmunds. I mean, shit, how many times have all the mags compared the 3-series to the G35 to the Audi A4 or the CTS against the 5-series and E-Class or print-masturbated to the new Ferrari?

And to the other point of price variations Porsche, Ferrari, Lambo = exotic. Corvette, and GT500 do not fall in that category at all. Some of their performance numbers are close, but the overall package isn't worthy of the "exotic" title. I would argue that the GT500 doesn't really compare to a Vette. Two different types of cars. I can see why they compare them, but I don't agree they are in the same "class".

When you buy a Ferrari,, much more of the money goes towards the name, than the performance.
Camaro-- you are paying almost solely for the performance, and not the name. GT500- some of your money is going for the Shelby name, but alot to the performance. Corvette- you are paying alittle for the name, but mostly for the performance, Now The higher priced, more exotic cars you get, the more money that goes to wear the prestige badge, the performance is great, but chevy has already proved to be able to give you phenomenal performance with he Z06 and Zr1 for MUCH less than a Ferrari/ Lambo/ higher end Porsche.

Didn't specifically name U... but the people in this thread who actually agree with the out come.. despite the numbers are Mustang owners... No offense meant directly at U. And I will agree with the rest of what U said. And ALSO.. why are people bring up a $13K difference when in actuality the difference in price between the GRAND SPORT and the GT500 is actually more like $4K??? ![]() As for the numbers that matter Horsepower, bhp @ rpm 436 @ 5900 ....................................550 @ 6200 Torque, lb-ft @ rpm 428 @ 4600 ............................................510 @ 4250 0-60 mph 4.1 sec .................................................. ..................4.4 sec 0-100 mph 9.2 sec .................................................. .................9.2 sec 0-1320 ft (1/4 mile) 12.4 sec @ 116.5 mph .............................12.6 sec @ 118.9 mph Top speed 190 mph* .................................................. .............155 mph* |

The issues? The interior materials and fit and finish are among the worst on any American car unless you opt for the interior upgrade package, and even that only takes you from horrible to acceptable and asks 10k for the bundle that lets you do it. The seats are terrible, how they have lasted this long without being addressed I do not know. Irony? The GTO which cost less and debuted before the C6 had superb seats, but the Vette goes slumming? Steering feel is inexcusably bad for a sports car. You may as well be getting feedback via smoke signal here because the steering rack is going to be largely unwilling to tell you anything. I have seen people declare this a 'nit pick', but I think it is important to remember that this is a sports car and only exists for the joy of driving. There are other more minor issues, but these three issues represent glaring shortcomings for this car IMO. |

Funny thing is in these comparisons there is never a limiting factor. You have to base the winner on one or two criteria. If you want to base it on dollars, then you have to let the less expensive car spend the difference on whatever they want. If the criteria is factory spec, then you have to leave price out of it.
I think the better comparison is the standard corvette vs GT500. Speed wise, the GS doesn't really add anything, it is supposed to add some handling advantages, and appearances. So we can take away the $10,000 the GS package adds. Now the cars are nearly the same price (within 2-3%). I think you could add a Z51 suspension pack? not sure anymore, I don't follow the options as much as I used to, in order to help handling and braking. If you are a fan of the make or the car, that is OK, you aren't going to change my mind, and I won't change yours. I think we can all admit the numbers say the Corvette is better. The ONLY category where the GT500 (notice no one wants to call this a mustang, yet people are willing to at least acknowledge that the GS is a Corvette?) is comparable (in a world of tenths and hundredths of a second) is the braking from 80 mph and cornering limits. I think we can all admit the GT500 is the less expensive car. Aside from that, the comparisons end. Run 1 lap at any track.....I think there would be a difference in the 2 cars. Run 3 laps at any track.....I think the differences would be monumental. |
