Underneath its essentially the same body as 2008 gt with some added weight, The Shelby gt 500 has around an extra 175 hp (given it weighs 400 lbs more) and it's only .5 seconds faster than the 2010 mustang? Those numbers for the stang are pre independent testing and pre production and unveiled for an auto show. The Challenger is rated at almost the same HP as the Camaro its 300 lbs more and its official number are 0-60 4.8. I can see the Camaro with the more modern suspension(compared to the mustang) putting down numbers closer to the Shelby GT 500 at 4.5. I know 4.6 was the official unofficial time but again that is pre independent testing and pre production. Anyhow .4 to .6 seconds would take alot of money to make up especialy when the numbers (times gets closer to 0). It definitely wont be new exhaust, cold air intake, pulleys, and a chip(30 or so hp at the rear wheels)alone . It will be closer but it will still need something more significant than the standard bolt-ons. The 15 hp increase is just to keep up with the weight increase.

Dont about everyone else on here, but if I had the choice to spend 26k and it was down to a v6 camaro or v8 mustang...i'd definitely pick the v8 mustang.

The one highlight that I found after hearing that they were putting only 315hp in the 2010 Mustang (which was sad back in 05... and VERY sad for 2010... only real issue I have with the newer Mustangs) is the Factory offered supercharger setups (not installed at dealer but at Ford so they say) which will offer two levels, 400hp and a 500hp version. That is whats currently being said at least, and I hope this stays true....
I contemplated an 05+ mustang but the 03/04 cobra with 425hp/405tq (390/390 so they say but FYI its underrated) was FAR to good to pass up even if its 3600lbs for the price and mod ability. The 05-09 Saleen's and Roush mustangs are not bad but basically they are GT mustangs with blower stock on them... My 03 has 480hp/460tq at the flywheel and I only have a cat back and a CAI.... and I am just getting started, not topping out as they nearly are off the dealership floor. I did need a supercharger to get there but that really doesn't bother me due to the ease of upping the boost and the fact my motor will take it without any real problems until I start pushing 550-600rwhp. When they make a newer mustang with real power and not charge 20k adm's I will get one. The new GT500 looks nice but the prices are still to high for what they are (sticker = good ... adm = no thanks) Hopefully ford will step up in 2011 or 2012 and up the performance. The sad part is they have never needed to in order to stay on top of things in their market segment but I fear if they don't break old habits of not having to try as hard in the performance areas they will end up being over taken by someone else. We shall see.. but for now the GT500 is the only newer Mustang I am currently interested in. |
