Barbs aside,

Did you go back and read the post I mentioned... If you do and you have any questions, I'll try to explain them as best I can...

I do not know everything, but I'm certainly willing to help anyone understand what I can...

Without getting into too much technical mumbo-jumbo...

there were some poor practices being utilized.

What I either have learned from as reliable a sources as I have, or from knowing the business as I do...

They had apparently been taking kicks for some time, approximately a month before the explosion. When the last casing had been run, and they were still taking kicks after the cement job, they should have shut it in and displaced to kill weight mud.... mud heavy enough to hold back the formation pressures... Instead, the company man supposedly ordered them to go ahead and displace the well with lighter weight fluid, which allowed formation fluids/gas to enter the well bore and start up the inside. As it comes up, there is less hydrostatic pressure on top of it and therefore it expands and accelerates...

This was apparently un-noticed due to the mud being displaced was sent directly to a boat. The next indicator that something was wrong was probably when the incoming fluid emptied the riser, and blew mud all over the rig. This again reduces the hydrostatic pressure above the formation fluids, and the gases found an ignition source on the rig and blew up... Due to the transfer of mud to the boat, and the late indicators, there was little use in trying to shut in the well at that point, even if they could, because that is like closing the barn door after the horse has left...

There are some indications that there were efforts to shut the well in, as evidenced by the flames blowing out of the diverter pipe in some of the photo's I have seen...

All of this is based on current information, and the best information we can get will only be after the investigation is completed.

Now, being as big a problem as it is, and in as deep a water as it is, we are all playing catch-up... I say all because we in the industry are following this and learning from it to hopefully prevent this from ever happening again... I'm not looking for affirmation as someone pointed out earlier...

We, all the companies that drill in deep water, will spend millions of dollars per rig to modify the BOP stacks we use as more information comes available. We will not speculate on how to fix that which we are not sure of... did the BOP fail, or was it something else. This remains to be seen...

As for that part of the gulf being shut down, any investigative or remediation form is going to do the same thing. Fire departments do not allow access to burning buildings, police departments do not allow access to crime scenes...Yes, open records acts do allow the general public some access to information, but let them minimize the risk and confusion by blocking access, and let them get it cleaned up, and then conduct the official investigation, and hopefully, we will all find out what really happened.

I hope this helps some...

I read everything you posted about drilling techniques. And You do indeed sound like a true expert in your field. It sounded very impressive.

At the same time, you are directly involved with the oil industry.

I hope you can understand why I could not automatically accept that the spin on the news is no different then the "spin" in this thread.

I'm sorry about the lives that were lost and I hope this conflict gets resolved soon. I don't feel like talking about conspiracies anymore.

Congrats on working for the most profitable industry in the entire universe. Have a nice day.

I do not except verbatim the newsy talking heads either...on any subject.

I agree and I hope this is resolved without futher damage, (too much to ask) or any further loss of life. It's tragic and catastrophic, and there will be some repercussions.

You also have a good day...

Wow this is really starting to look like a movie Script

CNN now has a "Gulf Oil Leak tracking" counter permanently on their front page.
According to them, that tracker is saying the leak is one barrel every 2 seconds, or 1,200,000 barrels a month. (see www.cnn.com)
It sure is interesting why they feel they need to post this info to the general public when this disaster is actually a national security issue that does not involve us. For some reason they want the general joe shmo public to have this info, as if later on when they number reaches 5,000,000 barrels, NO one will be surprised when people in the south states are forced to evacuate. This is comical to me. That chart on their front page pretty much proves they are trying to SELL something that probably is not true. They also do not site any kind of scientific reference as to where they are getting that oil flowrate information, or what independent firm measured it, or explained even HOW they could measure this when the leaks are in more than one place. What about the amount of oil they are able to salvage? Ha all the scare tactics. Talk about desperate. But AT LEAST they are posting this so you are very, very warned that something is coming later on and you won't be able to do anything about it. This is just a friendly warning, which i have to say, I do appreciate that. Glad I don't live down there. It would not surprise me if the "south" decides to rise again when they start going door to door and telling you your land no longer belongs to you anymore. this is going to get interesting. You'll see guys walking around with gas masks acting like all the air is toxic, or the water supply, etc. You will be forced to leave.

um, duh? These stupid 'news' agencies will do just about anything to get more people to read, they LOVE blowing things out of proportion regardless of what facts they may/may not have at the time. Later they'll write up a little apology on it 'oh, our numbers were incorrect on that, sorry!' and few people will even notice it. Tis why I read the 'news' with a grain of salt.

I've been VERY much affected by this spill, so much that for me to keep my job i will have to go to a 3rd world country for 6 months(maybe longer) due to the DRILLING Ban, NOT the oil leak.

having said that, i just came back from viewing the entire Mississippi coast and the beaches were in the best shape that i have ever seen them in 20 yrs. Not one drop of oil, no oil smell in the air, and the water was full of swimmers. I agree that the media and politicians use this as a platform to push their objectives and views into the limelight........

I make my living off the evening news
Just give me something, something I can use
People love it when you lose, they love dirty laundry

Well, I could've been an actor, but I wound up here
I just have to look good, I don't have to be clear
Come and whisper in my ear, give us dirty laundry

Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em all around

We got the bubbleheaded bleach-blonde, comes on at 5
She can tell you about the plane crash with a gleam in her eye
It's interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry

Can we film the operation? Is the head dead yet?
You know the boys in the newsroom got a running bet
Get the widow on the set, we need dirty laundry

You don't really need to find out what's going on
You don't really want to know just how far it's gone
Just leave well enough alone, keep your dirty laundry

Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're up, kick 'em when they're down
Kick 'em when they're stiff, kick 'em all around

Dirty little secrets, dirty little lies
We got our dirty little fingers in everybody's pie
Love to cut you down to size, we love dirty laundry

We can do the innuendo, we can dance and sing
When it's said and done, we haven't told you a thing
We all know that crap is king, give us dirty laundry

I understand that its BP's responsibility, but it bugs me how Halliburton was easily able to wash their hands of the disaster when it was their failed seal that started the whole mess. They just went on to the next well in the daisy chain and didn't check to see that the concrete settled correctly. This is also the fastest I've heard of relief wells being made(will be up and running in August). Probably thanks to BP's track record lately b/t the refinery explosion and now this.
