Did they go with you, or give you a time limit? I've never been to a test-drive you see.

They usually go with you and give you a route to take. However, a buddy of mine and I did get to take a spin in the new VW GTI by ourselves.

One of my local Chevy dealers has a salesman go with you, and it's on a set 'route'. A route that hasn't changed in over 10 years. I drove the same one in 1995 when I bought my Cavalier from them that I did in 2005 for the Aveo. While the other doesn't go with you, doesn't tell you where to go, AND doesn't give a time limit. I'm sure they want it back within a reasonable amount of time. I usually just drive to my mothers (about 5 mins away) and show it to her and my stepdad. Usually there for 15 or 20 mins. Then take the 'scenic route' back to the dealership. More ride with you, than don't though. Needless to say I much prefer to be given free reign instead of having them looking over my shoulder and driving a set route. |

If I go back to the dealerships I worked at, I can usually get away with going alone. It's even easier if you do like the wife and I have been lately and take the kids. "We have to see if the car seats all fit" and "we want to drive it" usually get the salesman to copy the license (some copy the insurance card as well) and off we go. Even with the 3rd seat SUV's, the sales guy doesn't really want to climb/ride back there, so it works out.
The other thing we tell them is that we want to see how it fits in the garage with the other vehicles. That usually gets us out of any "set route". Oh, and I've got one guy that while he said he had fun, won't go on a test drive with me again. I was testing a new Charger with the hemi (the little one) and pretty much tossed him around in the back seat (front to back with the acceleration and braking...side to side changing lanes on the interstate going...well, let's just say well over the legal limit. Incidently, the Charger was awesome....actually considering trading in our Tahoe on one. |

Off topic...whoops, but how did the "autostick" respond in the Charger?
