Put some ear plugs in. |

As far as the Harley thing goes- guy down the street goes to work at 6am and has straight unmuffled Harley pipes and he lets his bike warm up for 10 minutes. That's just plain rude. |

Ain't nothing like the tin-rap of a flowmaster on an old school iron block V8. I'msure I'll hurt some feelings here, but cutouts sound like ass. It's domestic rice, take a stock internal car, open a cutout, and voila', instant dumptruck. That said, I vote an efficient system well suited to the vehicle and the mods present. Yeah, my neighbors hate me when I fire up the big car, but I also don't feel the need to see how loud I can make my stockish bolt on cars by losing the muffler(s) or installing a cutout. A healthy exhaust note is one thing, just plain loud for no reason is another. I giggle every time I hear a late model truck with no muffler... And for those with DOD, I really giggle- 4 cylinders sounds sweet with an open cutout. ROTFL.

Nothing I can do about it. But I don't think the sound is obnoxious. I've never had anyone conplain about it, and I live in a small apartment complex. |

Read "This is Your Brain on Music." This great book explains how the Aural Cortex is connected to the emotional center of the brain (I believe the cerebral cortex). This means we human beings have an emotional response in part to certain sounds or combination of sounds or series of sounds. This can apply to chord or key changes in a ballad or the sound of a Harley firing up in the garage. To some it may be a negative emotion, to others positive. But emotional none the less. We all have our own tastes, but this at least explains the response. Cheers.

My car is loud, but when I'm in neighborhoods I make sure to be considerate. Of course the ricers who live down the street almost always drive those damn things through the neighborhood entirely in 1st gear. |

![]() But yes, obnoxious is obnoxious no matter what. Take my tC for example: the TRD exhaust gives it a nicer sound, but it's not really loud if I don't get on it (still not that bad when I do), and it doesn't sound like tin cans vibrating against each other

![]() What I find extremely obnoxious is the guys in motorcycles revving their bikes almost to redline wherever they go. It is seriously annoying. Now I don't know anything about bikes, but is it really neccessary to be revving them like that all the time? |

Is a loud exhaust any more obnoxious than a stereo booming such that I can hear it from 8 car lengths away with my stereo turned up? Funny that no one ever mentions that.
Generally for Harley guys, the loud pipes are so that the typical asshole motorist who fails to see them can at least hear them and be clued in to their presence on the road. Loud pipes do INDEED save lives.

Well here's what the AMA has to say about it:
"The AMA believes that few other factors contribute more to misunderstanding and prejudice against the motorcycling community than excessively loud motorcycles. All motorcycles are manufactured to meet federally mandated sound control standards. Unfortunately, a small number of riders who install unmuffled aftermarket exhaust systems perpetuate a public myth that all motorcycles are loud. Efforts by regulators to rein in excessive motorcycle sound often miss the mark by singling out motorcyclists with ordinances and laws that are unfair, impractical and unenforceable. " http://www.amadirectlink.com/legislt...ions/sound.asp It's not clear that loud pipes do save lives (pretty heavily debated in fact) and it's losing motorcyclists some rights in some communities. Even Sturgis is considering cracking down with a 94dB limit. Dirt bikers hear a lot more about this because they were in the fight first- they lost a lot of riding area due to unmuffled exhaust. |

Too keep this thread alive... My neighbors in my neighborhood asked me why I switched from my loud cat-less longtubes and flowmaster AT catback to the catted longtubes and the Magnaflow street catback.. they said its a shame when a car sounds so good (that was only done because I felt guilty owning a bar and coming home at 2-3am daily.) But now its back exactly how I like it! :-) YEEEHAW!
