Nice propaganda ("information, ideas, or rumors deliberately spread widely to help an institution"), but I'm not sure I'm buying it. Are they trying to persuade people by invoking fear or what??? Maybe what's in there will actually happen if they do not get an infusion of capital (i.e., loan, bailout, whatever you want to call it) and maybe not. No one has a "crystal ball" that can accurately predict the future. The fact that they are taking action shows me that they are worried they will not get assistance from the Feds and I'm sure all their lobbyists are working overtime on this one. The way the economy is heading, I'm sure there is going to be many people (no idea how high that number will be) out of work who have no ties whatsoever to the auto industry.
According to the Department of Labor stats, in October, the number of unemployed persons increased to 10.1 million. What about them? Don't they count? Where is an infusion of capital for small businesses? Did the Feds bailout my dad's business? Not a chance. Of course, my dad's business unfortunately failed at a time when the Feds were doing this sort of thing. Did my dad pull himself up, go back to school and retrain, and find employment...damn straight he did. No different than what many of the people who are out of work will do. If the infusion of capital will "heal" the Big 3's woes, then I'm all for it. I am worried such action will not be effective in the long run. |

If Ford, GM and Chrysler were all to fail, where do you think the executives that ran those companies would go? Most likely, they would create a whole new car company, secure private financing, and build cars again. Nowhere near as big as any of the ones that collapsed, but producing American cars nonetheless.
It's not like the automobile industry is not profitable, quite the opposite is true, but they cannot be profitable and make a quality product given the current situation they are in. |

Are there 'other' american car makers? Yes. But these are specially built cars that compete with comanies like Konigseg. They won't be spending a billions dollars at universities for R&D (Toyota and BMW won't either, not over here at least). Or employing thousands of engineers. Or be capable of mass production. Or generate tax revenue in the tens of billions. But they will exist. I will agree though, the current situation prevents them from being profitable and making quality products. The proof of this is somewhat self evident, but true none the less. If the could make profitable, quality cars they would and we wouldn't be debating about government loans for the automakers. However, everything that I've seen shows that they will be making quality, profitable cars begining in 2010 (well, I still need convincing with Chrysler), they just need help getting to that date.
