Parris Island here I come...

Well I enlisted in the USMC, I'm very excited about it. For 6 years I thought about it but kept getting cold feet when it came to talking to a recruiter. Well I finally was put in a position where I had to either step up to the challenge or continue down a road that led nowhere I wanted to be. I've learned a lot about the Corp over the past few weeks, got my asvab and meps out of the way. My recruiters office holds PT every Thursday and I went twice so far and intend to go every Thursday till I ship out late this year. I need to work on running, my legs aren't used to it, haven't ran since high school and I'm 24 now. Pull ups, push ups, and crunches aren't a problem for me. My question for the members already in the Corp is what is boot camp like really? I'm a little nervous I won't be able to keep up with the running. I do plan to run everyday to try to get good at it but are the DI's gonna try to run me into the ground? If I stick to my plan of running I probably won't have a thing to worry about, my recruiter thinks I'll do fine on my IST and be able to smoke the 13:30 required to do 1.5 miles, but I had to ask. Any stories about boot camp will be appreciated though. Semper Fi!

I wasn't in the corp, but I want to salute you for your decision. This country needs more young people like you. I want to be the first one on Camaro5 to officially thank you for your decision and your service to our great country!

What a courageous young man...good luck to you and thank you for enlisting in the USMC to serve and protect all of us here...you guys/gals are the true HEROES...
My son was in the USMC JROTC program for 4 yrs in high school, so I learned quite a bit about the Marines...right now he is going to college first....
I just know you will do well...keep us posted on here...

WOW... I wasn't expecting this lol. Thanks for the kind words all of you, it motivates me even more. After todays run I feel more confident that I'll do fine too, I can tell I'm adjusting to it. As far as the asvab, most of it is common sense really, its easy. the part that scared me was the math. I've been out of school since 2003 and I haven't done any complicated math since. If I had been fresh out of school I probably would of scored a lot higher. I still did excellent according to the Sgt. I scored a 72 on the asvab and my MM score was a 139, my GT score was a 123, EL score was 122, and my CL score was a 110. MM is mechanical maintenace, no suprise on that score since I've been swinging wrenches my whole life. GT is general technical, again no suprise lol. EL is electrical which was a suprise I got a good score cause I never really did a whole lot of electrical work. CL is clerical, like office work basically, and and even though it wasn't my stongest score its still above average from what I'm told. My scores cleared me to do whatever job I want in the Marines. If you have any common sense and know your way around a shop you'll do fine. Your gonna HATE going through MEPS though lol. You will be poked, prodded, felt up, violated, and its from about 5am to 6pm so bring a book and be prepared for a long day cause there is no sleeping at MEPS.

Wow, Lindenhurst here...what a small world...

Lindenhurst HS is only 1 of 2 schools on all of LI that offers the MCJROTC program...my son still keeps in touch with the Major that teaches the class...a bunch of his classmates enlisted after HS, however the class is actually called 'Leadership Education', it is NOT a recruitment program, as so many parents seem to misunderstand...it was the best thing to happen to my son in all his yrs in school...

Just noticed you joined the forum last May 2009, so did I...lol...

also noticed that I have a 'few' more posts on here than you...lol...

Best advice I can give, for boot camp only, stand in the middle and shut up. If you have a dumb question... someone else will have it also, let them ask. If you have to pee, someone else will have to pee worse, let them ask. etc. The DI's always punish the first few that ask the really dumb questions. Don't be one of them.

THIS.

AND.... When it's late in day two of the crucible and you're cold, tired, hungry and broke, just remember this:

Swingin' in the air wing..............is King!
