A great man Is gone
I got a call Thursday morning October 2nd at 8:30 that my dad had passed away. When they brought his pain meds to him at 7:30 he was awake and took them with no problem, When they went back at 8 with his breakfast he was gone. Although for me this was all so sudden, (he had just been in the nursing home a week) I found out that this has actually been an event that has unfolded since January of this year. My Father, was always thinking of others, and did not want anyone to worry about him. So behind the scenes he took it upon himself to make arrangements for when this day happened. Small things he did, now that I have had a chance to reflect on them were just signs that he knew it would not be long. Not until he could not hide the symptoms any more did he inform anyone of what was happening. Even then I did not know and he made everyone that did know promise not to tell me. As I found out this weekend he did that because of me going through all the Cancer with my wife, and all the problems I had afterwards. Myself I did not find out anything was really wrong until a month and a half ago. And then I did not find out it was Cancer until a month ago. The call I got last Thursday was a shock to me, I could not believe how fast this all happened. As I go through the next few weeks, I will try to carry on as best I can. I know it is going to be difficult, but one of the last things my Dad said to me a when I saw him Sunday before last was, “Don’t worry about me, I am going to be OK, You have to go on and live your life. Live each day to its fullest, you never know when the day will come and it will all be gone.”

I love and miss you dad.

Very sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my father 3+ years ago in somewhat similar circumstances.
I found and still find it helpful to focus on all the wonderful memories. I also still do my best to make my father proud. From your post I gather you will find the strength to move forward through the same. My thoughts are with you. |

Thanks everyone,
I got my love for this country from my Dad. He taught me that always support those that want to help the country grow stronger and not weaken it by giving away the things that made this country great. He taught me early that we were headed down a bad road when we started buying foreign made things instead of American made things. He said one day this country will be owned by people that don't even live here, they will take all our jobs, and make us a third world country. These and many other things he said and could forsee are now coming to pass. One thing he told me to always buy an American car. As I grew up he always had a GM car, he said they made the best, and we never had any problems with any we had. I learned to work on my own cars by helping him with his. He changed his own oil, performed his own tune-ups, and could tell just by listening to a motor run if it was tuned correctly. He had a knack with all kinds of machinery, Not one time did he ever get stumped by a machine that wasn't working right. He could fix anything. Growing up during the depression he learned not to toss anything out that could be used later.. If you look at his basement he lived that till the end. Old mowers, electric motors, various electronic devices. and if he didn't have a particular tool when he needed one, he either made one or figured out to modify a tool to do the job. He had several patents, and with just a 10th grade education woked his way up to be a Plant Manager. Like I said, He was a great man, and if only more people were like him this country would be better off today.

Even more similarities to my dad...10th grade, and he was a Manufacturing Engineer, with patents as well. He (we) moved to Wisconsin and he helped start Leeson Electric, which made electric motors. He retired in 87, and Leeson has since been sold to Regal-Beloit. So I can certainly relate. Again, hang in there, and hold on to all the memories!

I am so sorry for your loss...my dad turned 80 this year - they were both of what Brokaw called The Greatest Generation. It's always hard to see our parents age and become vulnerable. My condolences to you and your family.
