not for me, i can see a use for it from the hardcore mobile bloggers though, and journalists possibly.

i'd spend 700 and ship my macbook pro to axiotron before i bought an ipad. this modbook is win: http://www.axiotron.com/index.php?id=modbook

So basically anything apple comes out with now looks like an iphone? Howrevolutionizing... /facepalm

Congrats to Apple for coming out with this. Not my favorite company but at least they're doing things...

iPad just made Kindle, Sony and Barnes & Noble readers land-fill bound. Add the keyboard accessory & Net Books are toast, too.

I assume they didn't add video camera as it would bring the 3G Carrier networks to their knees - that's the only reason I may hold-off...

Multitasking is just a firmware update away. I'm sure they'll introduce it eventually. Seems to me their reason for not implementing it is because they want to keep everything speedy. If you want to run 10 apps, its going to slow everything way down.

It plays streaming video from Youtube and probably other sites. I'm assuming you mean a camera/webcam for stuff like Skype? I'm guessing that the iPad 2.0 will have a camera or you'll be able to get an attachment and app that lets you do this.

Yes - meant Video camera - updated my post. If it had the camera and you could have Wi Fi and 3G video conferencing this home run would go an additional 50 feet into the Bay (SF Giants obligatory nod given so close to Cupertino)

Think about what Apple is doing to the market though. Before the iPod, everyone still used portable CD players. Before the iPhone, nobody had touch screen phones. After, now everyone is trying to make one. Before the iPad, tablets were gimmicky and only a few companies even tried to make one. Now with the iPad's release, and even before it with all the rumors, everyone and their parent companies are making tablets. This may not be revolutionary in terms of what it can do programming wise. It is revolutionary in terms of what its doing to mobile-computing trends. In the next 5 years, I guarantee you will see tablets starting to take over normal laptops.

This is revolutionary. It brings Apple to virtually every electronics market—computers, music, phones, netbooks, readers—except game consoles. It won't be as popular as the iPod, but you can bet this product will bring heavy competition to a lot of popular products. Plus, it retains the recognizable design cues of other Apple products, making it unmistakable.

May be so but I said the same thing about the iPod - why would I need that ? Once I used one I knew it was the only way to listen to music.

Why would I want an iPhone ? Again, once I used it and saw the true power of internet/email mobility I was hooked.

Now the iPad - why? Because I'd rather sit on my coach, at a cafe, on a train/plane/bus and hold something like a book rather than a laptop - and when I want it to act like a laptop use the keyboard dock. Its not just the device - its how it enables us to access and use data/video/pictures/music/web/email/etc. in a whole new way.

Sure there will be imitators and we'll gripe about iPad 2.0, 3.0 etc., but once more Apple has taken a angle on a product class deemed sketchy at best and brought us all forward. They don't do everything right or well but they do more right/well than most...

I agree, there doesn't appear to be any NEW technology here. The only thing new is the platform. A large touch screen. I'm going to resist calling this a gimmick, but I seriously doubt it's going to have I-phone sales figures. For the die-hards and the wealthy to play with for now. How about if I just call today's announcement 'the gimmick'?

I do applaud Apple for taking a leap that everyone has been talking about but no one has accomplished ('til today). Today's society is moving to touch screen EVERYTHING, and this is moving us even further in that direction.

Is that where the touch part comes in...???
