You're missing the point. This isn't supposed to be some new sports car or something. This is literally re-inventing the car from the drivetrain up. GM needs to milk every last mile they can out of this car. The Volt concept would never have worked. The production model is a VAST improvement. This is one occasion in which function precedes form.

i dont think the concept was a "sportscar", id say a sporty (looking) economically correct vehicle. now it looks like everyother hybrid on the road. you CAN have function and a "sporty" form to go with it. and the concept isnt that far off from the camaro. is the camaro a "brick" also?

That's what we're saying, though. The concept was NOT economically correct. Bob Lutz even made a tongue-in-cheek remark about it being more aerodynamic when they tested it backwards. Like it was already mentioned; this is still a developing technology, and they needed to make this thing as aerodynamic as possible. They warned immediately upon the start of wind-tunnel testing that the shape was going to change. Personally, I think it looks 1000 times better than the Prius of the Intrigue, though.

Now it looks like everyother hybrid on the road.
Why? Because hybrids are inherintley 'ugly'? Well...yeah! Aerodynamic designs don't often yeild the best looking designs. Would you rather have it look "good" and be told that it can go a vast 30 miles on the battery? Or have it look better than its competition, though not beautiful in your eyes, and be told it can do 45 miles per charge?

You CAN have function and a "sporty" form to go with it.
Can you give us an example of an extremely aerodynamic family car that also looks Concept-Volt "sporty"?

And the concept isnt that far off from the camaro. Is the camaro a "brick" also?
I'm not sure what you meant by that last comment. The Camaro doesn't prioritize aerodynamics as much as it does an emotionally-evoking design. The 'brick' comment was regarding ONLY the Volt Concept's performance in the wind-tunnel. I think we can all agree that the concept Volt looked great. But it wouldn't have worked for this application at all.

the economically correct comment was intended for the motor, as far as a family car, in my eyes anything with a back seat is a family car and a 4th gen was pretty aerodynamic, was it not? so why not tone down the fender buldges and round off the back a little. and ill strike the brick camaro comment from the record, it is late. lol

I like the look of my prius thank you. Not to mention that I use little or no gas while stuck in traffic. Oh, and if your car can get 1000 miles on a single tank, you tell me.

^^^^ I've done it. Denver to Los Angeles on a single tank.

Not bad...liked the concept better, but what can you do. Of course I'd take the aerodynamics and gas mileage over looks when getting into an electric vehicle anyday...

Wow I didn't know you get over 83 miles on a gallon of gas.......I kind of doubt you do... especially on the highway... 1000 miles divide by 12= 83.33333 I have some friends that have a Prius and the BEST he has ever gotten was 55 MPG.....

As usual a Prius driver trying to make the car look better than it is..., I can get 500+ out of a tank on my HHR 16X32= 512 and that is good enough for me.

Sorry but to me the Prius looks like a humpback whale, it is just too oddball in shape... the Volt has a more traditional profile...which looks better IMO.

The prius also looks like it was designed after a gerbil.

Absolutely.

That's what I was going to say! Nothing like high-quality photos of the higher-up's! Everyone needs to, be-like-Bob and get "behind" the car if you must be in the shot.

I respectfully disagree with you, my friend. Camaro looks 98% the same, the volt looks "ordinary"-- $40,000 dollars worth of ordinary.

EDIT: Although I will say that it looks loads better than other alternative fueled vehicles in the past. EV-1, insight etc...

I can see the designers with their sketch pads, all sitting in a small circle around a gerbil in the middle of the table.
