Well look what Ford did to the Mustang nameplate.

Expanded it into a new customer base, CUV EV and possibly a sedan later, all the while still providing the pony car in ever increasing and varied performance orientations for the traditional buyer crowd?

gm's Corvette will likely be doing that same here in the near future. It makes great sense in the current and foreseeable market.

I'm looking forward to seeing EVs in NASCAR. Race 30 laps, then come in for a 45-50 minute pit stop to recharge. Drivers can get out, take a leak, grab some wings and beer, rinse, repeat until the race is over 10-15 hours later. They can even use the still burning batteries from the crashed cars to light the track for green lighting after the sun sets.

But their sales numbers say different. Mach E is starting to outsell Mustang Coupe (4,970 in July compared to 3,367). Maybe it’s not just Karen that has interest in the Mach E? For comparison, Camaro was 2,448 for July.

Do those sales figures take into account inventory availability? Maybe more Mach E available

So you guys think the sales numbers are the way they are because of the mustang name? Personally, I think the numbers are that way because of what people are buying now. The mustang Mach e could be called the “put new name here” and would have the exact same numbers. No one that loves the mustang is going out an buying this ev. Or very few people, IMO.

Edit: or should I say, going out and buying this car because of the name itself. They would buy it regardless.

Agree 100%.

The Mustang name slapped on it, I'm sure helps to draw attention to it, and give the allure of sport to it. (not saying it isn't quick). Calling it Mustang also provided a valid reason to style it similar to the current Mustang, but they could have used any other name with some relatability to the word Mustang and it would have worked just as well. Sales would be exactly the same.

My hope (and opinion) going forward is that if GM wants to use the Camaro nameplate, that they use it on a 2 door coupe with characteristics similar to the current car. A sports coupe EV...fine. If they want a sports sedan EV, or sports CUV (we already have Blazer SS EV, so I see no need) please just call it something else.

This, IMHO, is the beauty of what Ford did here. Mustang enthusiasts are gonna get p!$$€d, stomp, whine, complain and still go out and buy another Mustang coupe. CUV buyers are gonna see a vehicle that is different than the other CUVs on the market and not care one way or the other what it’s called. They’ll buy it because it’s different and has decent content and performance. But there will be a few people who can’t buy a Mustang coupe because they have kids in those awkward middle years where they’re not old enough to have their own car but too big to fit in the backseat of a Mustang coupe, so they need a CUV. It’s a small group, but it would add to the overall sales of the Mach E. I mean let’s be real…who would prefer an Edge over a Mach E? Between the two I’d take the Mach E every day and twice on Sunday.

Mach E : 5,180 (27 days, down from 89 in June)
Challenger: 9,744 (54 days, down from 63 in June)
Mustang: 5,311 (41 days, up from 29 in June)
Camaro : 4,899 (52 days, down from 78 in June)

Mach E has the lowest days in inventory, meaning faster turnover,

I know you're being facetious but the drivers can swap cars like they do in formula e.

Yep, and of it came to that they would have 12 cars lined up - think about it.

It'd be a mess--I don't watch NASCAR, though. I hear the next-gen FE cars are working on rapid charging so maybe they can cut down the number of backups by charging cars as they come in.

Impala would be nice for the new performance sedan. However, why not Chevy develop a newer name for this vehicle. We've used the old name plates to death, and in the process the cars became anonymous and tiring (impala). Why doesn't Chevy either develop a new name or recall an old name from the past that hasn't been seen in awhile (Delray or others).

People will call the new car whatever the mfr. names it; I think we can do better than the last sedan's name, "SS". While it was a nice car it certainly wasn't an original creation.
