Talks between GM and Cerberus heating up
http://www.cnbc.com//id/27228423?__s...t%7C&par=yahoo
It appears GM would like to get a deal done in the next two weeks or abandon the whole thing. http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/081016/busin...alks.html?.v=2 This is certainly farther along in the discussion process than anyone previously thought. I can see GM's keen interest in the minivans and Jeep, but other than that, there's nothing Chrysler has that would benefit GM. Other than an instant influx in liquidity, which is what GM desparately needs. So, with that, let's discuss..... |

I still say things would be better if Chrysler went with Ford than GM. I like Chrysler, but I think that things would be more mutually beneficial if they went with Ford.

This merger is a possibility for two reasons. GM needs money, which they would get from such a deal since it is pretty obvious that money is all Cerberus brings to the table, and Cerberus needs somebody to run their new toy, the Chrysler Corporation, since they obviously have not even the vaguest notion of how to do it themselves.
Both GM and Cerberus entertained a merger with Ford prior to starting talks with one another. Ford said no to both of them. |

So the question is, if this happens, which models will be phased out? I have a hard time believing that all the cars would survive a merger.

If this doesn't work out I look for Cerberus to go back to Ford and settle on a deal where Ford takes less responsibility for running Chrysler than Cerberus was initially looking for with Cerberus mainly getting bargain basement access to Ford platforms, manufacturing facilities, and/or drive-line components while Ford reaps the benefits of having a room-mate of sorts and potentially gets the Jeep brand. I have no idea what GM will do if this falls through. Although I suspect a Renault-Nissan like deal with a foreign auto maker would be a real possibility. In fact, a Renault-Nissan-GM deal isn't unthinkable....and could yield some very interesting results. In fact, on paper it looks great. In the real world......... |
