Nissan Recalls 540,000 Vehicles

http://autos.aol.com/article/nissan-...-north-america

Quote:
Japanese automaker Nissan announced a recall this morning for models in North America to inspect and repair brake pedal pins and fuel-gauge components. The recall impacts roughly 540,000 vehicles.

“At Nissan, we’re committed to the safety and satisfaction of our customers," Kevin Martin, VP of customer satisfaction, said in a statement. "We regret any inconveniences that our customers may experience as we take these precautions."

The North American recall, which is actually two separate recalls for brake pins and fuel gauges, affects a total of 539,864 vehicles. The majority of these are in the United States. No crashes or injuries have been reported as a result of these issues to date, said Nissan.

Models affected by brake pedal pin problems are the 2008-2010 Nissan Titan, Armada, Quest and Infiniti QX56.

In these models, brake pedal pins can partially disengage, causing a loss of normal braking. Nissan said that there have been three reported cases of this problem.

Models recalled for potential fuel gauge inaccuracies include the Nissan Titan, Armada and Infiniti QX56 vehicles made between 2005-2008 as well as the Nissan Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra produced between January 2006-March 2006 and from October 2007-January 2008.

These models may have fuel gauges that fail to accurately read the amount of gas that is left in the tank. This could result in a vehicle running out of fuel before the gauge reads empty.

Nissan says all vehicles currently on sale are free of both problems. Owners of models affected by the brake pedal pin recall will be notified to bring their vehicles to a Nissan or Infiniti dealership for a visual inspection and, if necessary, repair. Owners of vehicles affected by the fuel gauge recall are given the recommendation to maintain a fuel level of at least half a tank at all times.

Owners of recalled cars can contact their dealer or call Consumer Affairs at 1-800-647-7261 (Nissan) or 1-800-662-6200 (Infiniti) with questions.
Good brakes must be a hard thing to come by in Japan.

What is this? A Recall-party?

Good lord, it's a fad.

And this is precisely why no automaker has been jumping for joy at Toyota's recent problems, despite accusations to the contrary

Could be.

General Motors Recalls 1.3 Million Vehicles

Quote:
DETROIT - General Motors Co is recalling 1.3 million compact cars in North America to address a power steering problem that has been linked to 14 crashes and one injury, the company said on Tuesday.

U.S. safety regulators opened an investigation on Jan. 27 into approximately 905,000 Cobalt models in the United States after receiving more than 1,100 complaints of power steering failures.

The recall covers the 2005-2010 model year Chevrolet Cobalt and 2007-2010 Pontiac G5 in the United States; 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit sold in Canada, and the 2005-2006 Pontiac G4 sold in Mexico, GM said in a statement.

GM said it told the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration about the voluntary recall on Monday after concluding its own investigation that began in 2009.

GM said the affected vehicles can be still be "safely controlled" but it may require greater steering effort under 15 mph. Drivers will see a warning light and hear a chime if the power steering fails.

"After our in-depth investigation, we found that this is a condition that takes time to develop. It tends to occur in older models out of warranty," GM Vice President of Quality Jamie Hresko said in the statement.

"Recalling these vehicles is the right thing to do for our customers' peace of mind," he said.

GM said it is currently developing a remedy to fix the problem and will notify customers when the plan is finalized.

GM spokesman Alan Adler said Monday it will take time for the automaker to get 1.3 million new power steering motors from the supplier, JTEKT Corp., and GM will notify car owners when the parts are available.

Heightened scrutiny after Toyota recalls
The recall comes at a time of heightened public and regulatory scrutiny over vehicle safety issues in the wake of massive recalls by Toyota Motor Corp.

Toyota global quality control chief Shinichi Sasaki and North American President Yoshimi Inaba are scheduled to appear before a Senate committee on Tuesday for a third hearing on its handling of consumer complaints about sudden acceleration.

I wonder if some weren't initiated just BECAUSE of the Toyota issues. Bunch of companies probably thought: ooook, let's recall NOW instead of waiting for someone to find out about the issue and make us look as bad as Toyota does...

I was actually thinking the same thing today. If Toyota is the bad guy by default, then everyone else can get away with recalls for a little while. The press isn't going to hit the whole auto industry while Congress is interrogating Toyota alone. It actually seems like a good business strategy to have a recall now and avoid fallout later.

I thought the same. So many companies a few months ago thinking that it wasn't worth a few million dollars now realize if they don't fix it, it could cost them billions.

There probably isn't a better time to announce a recall than right now, unless you are Toyota. I can't think of a plausible scenario where someone could come out worse than Toyota by issuing a recall. It would have to be bigger, deadlier, with a larger cover-up. I just can't comprehend that happening
