Well, in all truthfullness this setup would save them over a half million dollars over a traditional distributed processing supercomputer. At least compared to the one that the National Weather Center uses to run its simulations.

The PS3 is much more powerful than most people realize. They are being used in distributed computing networks understand things like protein folding and are 10-20x more powerful than typical desktops

A gaming system? And a Sony, at that....
I suppose the graphics cards will help with image recognition.... ...odd that they wouldn't just purpose-build something like this for themselves. |

It will. Fundamentally, its not very different from most supercomputers out there. And it sounds like it could be functionally identical to the largest super computer in the world, the series of BIONIC ____@home distributed computing projects (largest of these is SETI@home).

It works, not the first time it's been done. Very cheap way to build a supercomputer relatively speaking. They're also using the latest greatest graphics cards to build supercomputers too.
Here's a guide to doing it yourself: http://www.ps3cluster.umassd.edu/ |

Think of it as being similar to battery power. If you want ... 9V you could go out and buy a single 9V battery, design one yourself, or get 6 AA in series. But what happens if you want to upgrade to from 9V to 24V. You can toss out the 9V, design a new 24V battery, or add 10 more AA's.

As if our Tax dollars are ever spent well.
And when it comes to the Air Farce, they always have some of the best techno stuff. The need it to think for them.
