Ok, this ONStary stuff is getting a little creepy...

Will it ever stop?....

GM’s OnStar One Step Closer to Becoming Big Brother

Quote:
Technology can hurt a driver as much as it can help him. For example, those convenient automated toll systems (i.e. EZ Pass, FasTrak, SunPass, etc.) can also use their time/distance data to figure out if you were speeding. GM may be hitting even closer to home with a new OnStar feature. Right now General Motors will use OnStar to pass on information to their GMAC Insurance arm about your annual driving mileage for possible insurance discounts.

This is purely voluntary program, and GM assures that the data will go no further than annual mileage. But how soon before they want data on speed or acceleration, all disguised under the cloak of lower insurance premiums?

The same side of me who wants to build a bomb shelter in my tool shed is also having trouble with this new OnStar service. After all, Ford is developing cars that talk to each other, GM is putting money into cars that drive themselves, and now your car wants to tattle on your driving habits. Big Brother is no longer trying to get in the passenger seat; it’s trying to drive!

I think it’s too late for me; I’ve already given in to sat nav and climate control. At least for now GM is doing no evil, and instead letting you save some additional cash on car insurance if you drive less then 15k miles a year. Besides, Big Brother technology is nothing new in cars. For almost a decade GM and other manufactures have been installing a “black box” like device that records driver stats, but your car has kept the secret to itself …so far.

Good luck. Heard it's damn near impossible.

bah, let them do it. For all the other saftey and security features OnStar offers, I could live with this.

And frankly...(might be considered niave)...if they say the info goes no further than mileage; I believe them. Because if it did, and that ever got out........ OUCH: GM!

Cars WILL be driving themselves one day; but even that will be an on/off feature, so I see no point in worrying about it.

Kind of reminds me of a sci-fi story I read as a child about a guy who lives near the desert and has a garage under his house, he has a muscle car in the garage (I don't remember what make/model).

Even though decades before fossil fuel burning vehicles were outlawed he cherrishes the car and keeps it up. He finally decides that he has to take it for one last drive. He uncovers it, puts the top down, fires it up and backs it out of the garage. He pulls it out on a desert highway, long abandoned, and takes it through the gears. He is in heaven.

Meanwhile, over a hundred miles away a sensor goes off at a military base. CO2 emissions detected. A hydrogen powered helicopter takes off to intercept the violator. As they approach the vehicle a loud speaker directs the driver to pull over and exit the vehicle, he keep driving. Again a warning comes from the helicopter to pull over or force will be authorized. The driver keeps the pedal down and accellerates.

The hellicopter climbs, targets the car with an air to ground missle and fires. The car is hit, completely destroyed, and the burning hulk rolls off the highway.

The pilot and crew congratulate themselves that yet another criminal has been eliminated.

Every time I hear Al Gore I think of this story!

I'll just be getting my car without this onstar in it unless I have no choice with the SS/RS package. I simply don't want to spend more money on a feature I'll rarely use..

its really very simple, find the wire that powers the onstar and , SNIP!, problem solved.

ok probably not the best idea but it will work.
Screw the MAN, no offense TAG, But if I'm going to get caught speeding then it better be the old fashioned way...They hear the roar of the V8 and see my blur as I speed past them.

I don't like that at all. State Farm, Progressive, and Allstate don't need to know how I drive.
