Tale Tale?

So I was meeting with a client last week and decided to ask him about his new Mustang 4.6 V8, which is in a stunning blue color. He proceeds to tell me about his modifications and he is really into them. The cold air intake adds 30hp he said, and the throttle body spacer with air vortex adds more hp, and the Bama chip adds more hp. With all that he was up to 100hp over stock.

Now I'm not familiar with the Ford engines, but with what I've read on these forums over the years for the V6s and V8s and what I've experienced with my limited mods, I don't think anyone is getting 100hp out of just that. I really wanted to ask him "Show me the dyno results." Being a good professional, who provides services to this client, I did not.

It was a good thing you didn't ask him....he might have gotten insulted. HWOEVER, he is living in a dream world if he believes he is or has gotten much out if his bolt-on's. There is one very important thing that people don't realize or remember. The mfg states in their claim as to their product....it can add "UP TO" X number of H.P......which actually neans you "could" get the max number....OR, more that likely, get NOTHING. but most people when start bragging about their cars added H.P. from bolt-on's stated the MAX that they got. Just the way it is....the best thing to di is allow them the fantasy......that is unless its someone you are willing to have them "take it to the track"....then just tell them that very thing.

With all the computer management nowadays, it's not as simple as slapping on a part and getting more HP. Most of the time the computer sees a change in the air/fuel and then starts compensating. He could vary well be hindering his performance, rather than improving it. The only way to truly know, is through tuning. But anyways, if it the box said he added 50 HP, then it must be true...

In addition to that, the placebo effect, coupled with the serious desire to feel positive results, has people really feeling like those horses have been added. I know a lot of people who felt real gains in HP after dropping those snake- oil/ fuel pills in their gas tanks... they swore they felt "a lot more power!" Until, well, those things were revealed to be a complete hoax...

If it was a 4.6 3V (2005-2010 Mustang) then a full exhaust, CMCV delete (or the steeda CMCV plates) and intake could get you to about 375 HP (crank) or a 75 HP gain. To get to a full 100HP over stock (400 HP) you'd need cams, the FRPP intake manifold and UDP's in addition to all the above..which would still net you "only" around 340 WHP.

If it's a 4.6 2V you'd need a full top end kit in addition to a full catless exhaust.

So is it possible? Yes...with those he claimed? No.

The best thing I ever saw was a bumper sticker that said "this sticker adds 10 HP"

Make sure those interior light bulbs are not half full with fluid and double check them wiper blade fluid levels. When you drive real hard they tend to go down quite a bit and you lose horse power... you can tell when your indicator lights start to dim a bit and aren't as bright as they use to be.

It was a new Mustang purchased in August, so probably a 2016. I just happened to mention the conversation I had to him with one of his co-workers (a real car guy who lives in reality) and he just started shaking his head. I didn't have to say what I was thinking in regards to the HP numbers. And this "real car guy" had a sticker on this desk that basically read this sticker adds 5hp. So yes, those stickers to exist! I must get me one or 20.

If it's a new Mustang then it would be the 5.0 "Coyote" V8, rated 435 HP and 400 TQ.

Intake/Tune usually net 20HP/30TQ on Coyotes. Throttle body spacers do nothing. The exhaust does nothing but reduce weight but only if it's a cat-back, axle backs do nothing except increase sound.
