Racism..?

First off let me start by saying I only mean this discussion in the most respectful of ways. I also checked the rules, and while this isn't politics or religion, I hope I'm allowed to post this.

So today I got in the debate about white people are the only people who can be racist. This is news to me. Last time I checked, Racism is defined as;

The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.
~prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

To me, that applies to ALL races. His rebuttle was in order to be racist, you have to have power and prejudice. Nowhere in any credible definition does that stand true. That is a redefined definition. With that logic, a continent such as Africa that has a population of 76% blacks who obviously have the power, could then be racist because the prerequisites were met, correct?

This isn't the first time I've heard someone throw out that only whites can be racist. If that were indeed the case, why would the definition be so broad and not specifically state white's in it? I don't mean for this to offend anyone by any means, I just would like to know others opinions on the topic. Please be respectful. Thanks.

Glad people at least share the same opinion. When I told him he was redefining the definition, I got told to take a sociology class or two..

There are people out there who have more book smarts than street smarts and it sounds like you ran into one of them.

I know what he was getting at, because I've heard basically the same definition in sociology classes while I was in college. The difference is knowing what a complete crock of sh*t that definition is as it applies to the real world.

Last I checked it was a continent and last I checked any one can be racist. Or bad at geography (Just kidding

). Really don't have to have societal power, that may help if you want to create some sort of institutionalized racism or bias towards a group on a large scale but for run of the mill racism you don't need that. Just need a dislike for a certain group and selective judgment to justify the narrative in your mind. I.e, if I dislike Inuits and I see a dog sled double parked, I could be like stupid Inuits, double parking their dog sled again. I don't have to be white to think that, because only allowing white people to be racist, is well, racist. Any group can be, ignorance is equal opportunity my friend.

I kinda want in on this discussion, alas it would bring politics into it and it's not allowed. So let me be vague. History as shown that it is easier to rule people when they are divided into social groups and pitted against one another. All rulers have used this as a way to control and shape the peasants opinions. No one is born hating another human.

That is all. Take from it what you want.
