Corvette moving toward brand autonomy?

An interesting short article that does make me wonder what GM may be planning for the future. This and all the conversations that have been had here as to the cost of the Camaro and the G6's enhancements that could possibly be an indication of a move to move it up in class away from the "pony" car label, or to even create a new class.

As usual there will be varying opinions but without direct insight from the GM board who can honestly say!

This has been talked about for a long time. I don't see it happening, but I also don't see a super car in a Chevrolet showroom. But Ford will face their GT, all of a few hundred, serviced and sold through Fod dealers.

So the short story is to allow Rich guys to not have to mingle with the low lifes when they decide to basically purchase a Chevy just like the low lifes. Got it.

Why should I have to buy my 70k truck and have it serviced at the same place as a Cruze buyer too? It's too good to share lot space or a lift with that trash.

Kicking around the idea of splintering the C8? into 2 categories may not be a bad idea.

The GT is limited to about 250 cars this year but they received 6,506 fully submitted applicants showing that they were willing to shell out something north of 400k for it. I'm sure the GM bean counters saw that figure too.

The mid-engine Corvette is going to tick off the purists. My Mom is ordering a 2017 and she's mad about this and she's not even a gear head. "Who puts the engine behind the seats" she asked when I showed her the article. I wasn't going to try to explain to her about Ferraris and Lamborghinis, but if she's not thrilled with this imagine the hard core Corvette enthusiasts and collectors.

Me personally, I think it's great that GM is coming out with a mid engine super car but I also think the traditional front engine/rear drive layout of the Corvette should continue production. Call the mid-engine the Corvette Zora and the traditional keep the Stingray nameplate.

As for the whole performance division separating from the rest of Chevy, that's not a bad idea. Most people who buy Malibus, Impalas, and Cruzes wouldn't even know a Camaro if they saw one, and the people who sell and service them tend to know less about the car than most of us Camaro owners and customers. A dedicated Chevy performance division for sales and service works for me.

The issue is trying to reach a Porsche buyer. Not your $70,000 Suburban but the $200,000 911 GT3 buyer. That guy.

Mrs. Number 3 was Marketing Manager for Corvette for many years and you couldn't pay a Porsche Club member to even consider a Corvette. This discussion is simply related to trying to attract that money. You shouldnt take it personally.

Imagine a Corvette sedan or SUV........

Im not taking it personally. This conversation is no different than the gen6 moving up in clas . The GT3 buyer most likely isnt going to give a Chevy the time of day even as it's own brand.

Well, maybe 20 years down the road and a lot of media brain washing it may. It's just like Ram having it's own brand. Everyone I know still calls it a Dodge. That is a huge identy crisis to overcome. It isn't like that GT3 buyer doesn't already know what the Corvette is all about. They just don't carry the prestige of the GT3 at the country club. With is appearing that we are finally getting a mid engine vette, it looks like they are going to try. Welcome to the world of 200k vettes and 80k Camaros. IM glad that im getting towards the end of this game and have many great toys in my chest. Real performance is going to be out of reach before long for a lot of people.

Mid engine Corvettes are headed to $100,000.00+ base price. Out of my reach once they get there.

I understand your theory, but to me, it seems like a very large fence to jump. Porsche vs Corvette has been around less than Ford vs Chevy. In the Ford vs Chevy world, very few cross the line and shop and BUY the other brand. We know about the other brand and their cars and capabilities but more for comparison purposes not necessarily to buy the other brand. Porsche vs Corvette is even more segregated. There are always a few that that cross over to the dark side and purchase the other brand, but the vast majority stay very loyal to their initial brand of choice.

I understand your wife and Corvette wanting to compete head to head on the sales floor with Porsche but I just do not see that many people that are willing to drop a 100K on a Porsche change their mind and buy the 100K Corvette sitting next to it. I could be way off base, but in my opinion, I just do not see it. I love my Corvette and all of the ones that I have owned but in almost 40 years of Corvette ownership, I have only had one Porsche owner ask for a ride in any of my cars.
