Rev limiter

Hey guys question about the rev limiter. Its set to 6800 on my car and i hit peak power at 6600 sometimes i hit my rev limiter. I was told the rev limiter is the car just stopping the flow of fuel. Cant be bad for the engine right? I would think it would be the same as just taking your foot off the gas really fast? I need a shift light lol

I would definitely get a shift light. I had one that was just a light with different RPM pills in it that would trigger the light. The factory tach is off, quite a bit actually, especially in first and second.

If you are making peak power at 6600 and the limiter is at 6800, I would do a 6400 or 6500 pill or setting for the shift light so that by the time you see it, and shift, you should be right about the top of the curve and away from the limiter.

It cuts fuel and spark, but I would try to stay off of it as much as possible personally.

Yup learned this on my v6 and v8, after you hit the limit it feels like someone turned your engine off and on for a second, it feels like there's no power (because there isn't)

No hitting the rev limiter is not the end of the world. A mechanical over rev can be. Your PCM does two things, cuts fuel, and closes the throttle blade. Do yourself a favor and get a shift light. I use the MSD shift light, part #8963. It has 4 RPM zones, or 4 gears you can set at different points.

You can set the first zone for 5500 and the second for say 6000. I call them zones because the shift light actually does not know what gear you're in. It only goes from 1 thru 4 from start to finish. If you downshift to another gear it will not know what gear you have downshifted into. So in effect you can have 4 separate settings for what you may want. All without changing any hardware, and the install is a snap.

I have the link on my computer, and am not home. If you google that part number with the words "MSD 8963 installation instructions" it will take you right to it.

Just checked it out, thats the one im going with. Should this one be set early like 6400 rpm because theres a delay?

You can set it however you prefer. I set mine to blink 500 RPMs early.
