There was a 10 second spot on our local news tonight late in the broadcast, when it was GM it was one of their top stories and they spent several minutes on it.

That's because GM is one of the largest American companies and was recently kept afloat by all of the people watching those local news channels. It is simply bigger news because of the context, not the severity.

That's interesting. I've always figured here in Detroit we always had extended negative coverage by our media because there's so many people affected by what happens with the traditional Big 3. They are, essentially, local businesses.

The news channels here love to go after local small businesses and put 'em in "the hall of shame" or whatever they want to call some negative light on local business. I always figured the extended coverage was an extension of that thinking.

But, I guess it's more nation wide than I thought.

Something I find interesting is that on the Motor trend App I have there is not one mention of this. There is a story about the Subaru recall but nothing about Honda yet.

Just like when the MH370 plane went missing first thing they mentioned was the engines (rolls-royce). When the Asia air just crashed I still have yet to hear any talk or mention of the engines (GE) things that make you go hmmmmm

I point this out all the time to my SO when we're watching the news - it's often not what is said, but what is missing.

The media will always influence public opinion by what and how they show the news. And they all do it, local, national and world news organizations.

Lost in this discussion is the fact Honda is actually facing TWO penalties that add up to 70 million...

Officials from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration today said Honda failed to submit early warning reports to them "identifying potential or actual safety issues." The penalty was two $35 million fines — the first for failing to report 1,729 injury and death claims to NHTSA between 2003 and 2014, and the second for failing to report warranty claims during the same period.

So it's the same 35 million penalty assessed to GM for failing to notify for the injury/deaths, with an additional 35 million for not reporting the warranty claims.
