China Syndrome
...of a different kind. As reported on autoblog today, China is reportedly considering banning the export of "rare earth minerals", some of which are critical to the battery production for electric cars and hybrid vehicles. Since China produces 95% of these critical minerals...ummm, this could be a problem. Hopefully the state department is on this?

The only good thing about this "consideration", Saskatchewan seems to be semi-rich in these minerals as well(maybe not to the extent of China), and as a result the stock price of the company I was holding doubled last month
![]() But I agree with the chef, bombs would be dropped if they decided to do that.

That could backfire. For example, GM's largest growing market is Asia!

And they could also call in the enormous debt that countries such as ours owe them.

if they chinamen wont sell it to us we will mine it here or somewhere else, exhaust what resource they have there and the US will have the most resources on earth, thats what we are doing with oil. we suck it out of the middle east, then south america, then we will sell it to everyone else at high prices

This is both an absurd and ignorant statement. My intention in starting this thread was not political, but rather to address what would happen to hybrid and electric car development if the essential elements (95% of which are mined in China) would not be available. That is all.
