Smokey and the Bandit

Sitting in the hotel room in Dubai watching the first Smokey and the Bandit. Not a lot of choices in English. Man they sure beat the snot out of the TA. I wonder how many cars they went through to make that movie. Campy movie but Burt Reynolds in his prime.

Three Trans-Am cars were used in this movie. Director Hal Needham claims in the DVD documentary that they could barely run towards the end of the film's production....and the one that they used for the bridge jump was totally destroyed ...... and another piece of trivia.....was that the stock engines in the cars didn't make enough power to make the jump, so they put in a 350 Chevy motor in that car.

Only three? I'm surprised. They started playing the second one but I couldn't stay with it. One is enough for today. I knew they cars were under powered compared to our modern cameras but they sure did make them sound good. And the tire smoke. He couldn't drive off with out leaving a fifty foot burn out.

i saw on MSN news like a couple weeks ago that one of those T/A sold at an auction, as Reynolds was selling some stuff from the movie and his career. i thought that car sold for like 70K but not in the greatest shape.
