what happens to the panels when airbags go off?

This kinda scares me, what happens to those big thick panels that are covering the airbags? Do they fly off into your face?

From looking at people's crashes and of Indipower (??) car when it was torn apart. . . IMO, it looks like all the airbags are located in the pillars. It LOOKS to me that the passanger pillar airbag inflats across the dash and no bag comes out of the dash itself.

Also have the driver pillar, steering wheel and the back to pillars.

I am not 100% sure on this, but after looking at a lot of pictures that is the conclusion I came up with.

I hope not to tell how they work but the pillars/side airbags open up under the panel and the panel lifts up. As for the dash the airbag is attached to the dashboard.
