Mac vs. PC, DUN DUN DUN
I saw the argument in the Windows 7 thread comparing Mac OS X to Windows so I figured I'd start an entire thread to the entire Mac vs. PC argument. That means the hardware and the software.
Personally, I'm on the Mac side. I've got a PC but I haven't turned it on in about two years. Yes, two years. It's a 3.6 GHz P4, so the noise is probably part of the reason. Terrible, terrible CPU design from Intel that requires a huge ass fan to keep it from exploding. I hear very good things about Windows 7, so I'll probably wait for the final release and install it as a comparison. I never had a problem with Vista, but I only used it about five times to help my parents out when they had issue, like the STUPID issue of opening the on-screen keyboard and it will continue opening on every start up after that. I am computer literate so navigating either OS is not really an issue for me and I'm sure I could accomplish everything in either OS without issue. However, I love sharp styling and design and OS X definitely stands out there for me personally. Windows 7 appears to be stepping up what Vista started. The glass look was neat (I think so at least). A question for Windows users though: does Windows have an instant search application? I love Spotlight on OS X but I have not used a Windows computer since XP where I needed to do a search so I didn't have a chance to check it out. I think much of the "problems" with Windows are self-induced by its users. I never ever had a virus when I used XP. Sure, there are security holes in Windows but security issues also exist in OS X. I think that OS X was built with security in mind from the ground up (e.g. prompting for a password to accomplish certain tasks), but I think that with the user base Windows has these security features become useless because people generally will just type their password with no idea why they're doing it. I don't think I'd ever take issue with using either OS, but I prefer OS X personally. The hardware, well, the internal are the same (well, depending on the brand, but whatever). Where Apple differs, I think, is their aesthetics. I don't think I've ever seen more gorgeous offerings from any computer company. However, that's all subjective. |

I currently have 3 Mac's in my home, two MacBooks and one Desktop. I also have an HP Pavilion laptop.
Ill take the HP every day of the week. The Apple is nice but it has its shortcomings, most obvious is its being way too $$$$$$$$$ for what you get. You buy the brand name.

Try the same thing with this pair's predecessors of 1970 or so and you'll find yourself in a bit of a wrestling match. Ain't progress wonderful? Maybe yes, and maybe sometimes it's fun to wrestle."

I'll keep my answer short and simple so I don't get very into this topic.
It's all personal preference. Sound/Video/Image manipulation and editing: Mac for sure Anything Else: PC hands down Games come out for PC with a small portion making mac versions. Some don't even offer mac support. You can build your own pc pretty easily, I have yet to see MAC parts a la carte. People at the Apple store treat their customers like dumbfcuks. Not morons, but 3 steps above at dumbfcuks. My fiancee loves her ipod but refuses to take it in when it's broken for that reason so I repair them. I'm a pc guy as you can tell. Gaming all the way. |

I'm a MacBook Pro user, and this is now my second Mac (I had a Rev. B MacBook Pro as well, that I spilled coffee on).
I've come to really love the Mac. I mean, I see why people use Windows, but it's just not for me. I play maybe one video game every five years, and the only device I own that I can't just as easily use on my Mac is my archaic film scanner, and I tolerate Windows for that. I don't think that either is really "better", they're just different. I do a lot of photography and such, and I'd go NUTS trying to organize all of my images, etc. on a PC. I know there are solutions, but none as simple and well thought out as the Apple solutions. Now if I were a gamer, I'd probably be the exact opposite. The only thing about OS X is that some of the permissions can be a little rough, but I stopped using Windows around 2005 and started using several different distros of Linux as my primary OS for about two years, so that makes the permissions easy for me, but for someone switching from Windows or that isn't really tech savvy I could see permissions being an occasional problem. The same could be said about spyware, viruses, etc. on the PC.

It is a personal preference. I am in Graphic Design, so it is the MAC all the way for me. Getting around in windows is very clunky compared to the Mac OS. Just the image view option of a folder alone makes it worth it's weight. And the Mac people I have delt with have been great, always treated me with respect once I told them I have been on MAC for so many years now.

I use both, but I'm a PC guy. Even put XP on my mac with parallels.
i find Mac looks 'pretty', but my experience with it hasn't been good. the mac has given me my fair share of headaches in lost data and freezes. my Dell laptop (Vista Ultimate) has been fantastic, only complaint is the touchpad is about a third of the size of my macbook pro. that's one thing apple got right for sure, the touchpad with 2 finger scrolling, 2 finger right click, zooming, and everything else it can do.

PC guy
Mac are nice, but they are overpriced and most owners are pretentious. But atleast with a Mac, you get a piece of mind that its well build and you wont get virus' and whatnot. I would own a mac, but I'm a gamer. As for Ipod vs Zune. It only makes sense to use the Zune as a PC owner. I really do prefer the Zune more because its more compatible and easier to navigate. I hated the touch wheel on my ipod, had to sell it.

I usually like to carefully weigh both sides and find a diplomatic solution. There is no diplomatic solution. I've worked with a lot of Windows programs and a lot of Mac programs. Saying that Microsoft products are more popular is no excuse for the mediocre product with which they associate. The unfortunate truth is that every brand and product associated with Microsoft is terrible with the exception of the XBox. You can disagree, but my experience with a long line of computers has found that Apples are superior in durability and reliability.

Both...
I have a Dell XPS M1530, parents have a Dell Inspiron 600m, and we used to have a decades-old Mac that absolutely refused to connect to the internet... If I have the opportunity to get a Mac in the next few years, I might pull the trigger...but I'm still very satisfied with my XPS.
