Insiders Claiming 3.7L V6 for 2011MY Mustang
Insiders including Blue II on BON and Wescoent on GM Inside News are now claiming that the base 2011 Mustang will be the first rwd application of the new Duratec 'Cyclone' V6, and that the engine used will displace 3.7L. Ford Australia recently reviewed a north-south version of the 3.7L provided by FNA for possible Falcon duty, and decided to keep the currently employed 4.0L I6 due to the added torque the inline unit brings to the table. It seems likely that the unit tested by FOA is the same one being readied for Mustang duty, and according to insiders that test engine employed next generation heads and intake leading the engine to produce a bit more power than the 3.7L unit currenly used in the MKS. For reference, the 3.7L unit currently employed in the MKS produces 275hp and 276lb-ft of torque.
Right now it looks like 2011 base Mustang specs will be.... Curb weight less than the current base 2010 which weighs in at 3400lb. More than 275hp and 276lb-ft of torque. A six speed automatic is also a given although I have heard nothing regarding what the manual transmission offering might be. If the car drops more than one hundred pounds, and Ford finds another 10hp/10lb-ft of torque and slightly fattens/flattens the torque curve we could be looking at a solid 13 second car here. |

Gee, my concerns about weight suddenly seem very relevant now don't they. "Oh, sure the Mustang weighs less but it is way down on power" "The Mustang will never catch the Camaro" "They can afford a better interior because the mechanicals are so weak." Yeah, maybe GM should have kept the Jenny Craig promise. That suddenly seems very important.

Other interesting tidbits from various sources that are arguably off topic, but which I think apply to a future Mustang engines related thread.
1: Seems the new 5.0L wont be lighter than the current 4.6L 3-valve, which confirms the notion that the 'lighter' comments surrounding this engine apply to a direct 4.6L DOHC to 5.0L DOHC comparison. Don't celebrate just yet though bowtie fans, it seems the overall weight of the current 4.6L 3-valve and upcoming 5.0L are very, very close. Think somewhere between 20 and 40lb heavier as a total driveline package and you are there. 2: There is a supercharged 5.0L V8 in testing for the Australian Falcon, codename Miami, but this engine wont see duty under the hood of any Mustang. That said, a blown 5.0L is testing for US high-performance applications under the codename Roadrunner although there is no hard data yet suggesting what kind of power adder is being used. Many suspect this is a revival of the GTDi 5.0L engine program shelved not so long ago so that Ford rd could concentrate on maintream, high volume engine applications. Also under development, an even higher output version of the naturally aspirated 5.0L V8 slated for Mustang GT duty in 2011. This engine is also apparently a part of the Roadrunner program. 3. The resurgence in development of low-volume, high-performance engine variants suggests that Ecoboost programs as a whole are going well since programs like the GTDi 5.0L were initially shevled to redirect resources to the mainstream EB programs. 4:According to 05Stang KC on TMS a program to create a modern day Shelby GT350 is apparently underway at Shelby American in Las Vegas utilizing a a tweaked 3.5L Ecoboost V6. Plans are not yet solidified and this may or may not happen. |

Maybe Ford will blow us away and build an IRS Dual-Clutch Shelby Cobra with a 480hp High revving V-8 and Carbon fiber roof...

A tick over 13.0 sec. and you're through the quarter-mile. It's a rush, of course, but not overly dramatic. Try the same thing with this pair's predecessors of 1970 or so and you'll find yourself in a bit of a wrestling match. Ain't progress wonderful? Maybe yes, and maybe sometimes it's fun to wrestle."

good job ford, its about time you update your engines in mustangs, what i find interesting is how much horsepower is going to have, is ford going to add DI to match the camaro v6 numbers ? or leave it around 270-290 hp ?
"The engine will likely have slighty different horsepower and torque ratings in the Mustang. Changes had to be made to the front wheel drive version of the engine for longitudinal placement. These revisions include a new intake manifold, exhaust manifolds and accessory drive system to name a few. A more free-flowing air intake system geared for performance may also bolster final horsepower." |
