If it wasn't raked, I'd suspect it was to haul 4x8 sheets of plywood on the car roof.

Years ago I had a car mag that had a story on a '69 Charger Daytona that had been bought in the '70s by a carpenter. He wanted it because a 4x8 sheet would perch on the high wing and the roof beautifully.
