US Coast Guard?

Just kicking the tires on something new. Any Coasties on here, past or present? My current job feels like such a dead end and I don't feel like I'm doing anything special anymore. I know a guy that's been in the USCG full time for a couple years now and loves it. I was looking at Gunnery Mate rating as I have a real fondness for weaponry, he said from what he's seen it's a great rating to go for and was his other choice. I guess the biggest hurdle to get over would be going from living at home and always being around town to all of a sudden being gone for 8 weeks to basic, then being assigned to who knows where (hopefully the Gulf Coast) and having my paltry little always-know-what-Im-doing life turned upside down, lol. It will pay better, let me see a little more of the country, and teach me all sort of new things.

It was either this or I considered local law enforcement. Doesn't pay any better than what I do now but at least I could give back to the community and do something a little more exciting. I think working for the local parish police department would be cool too. Two guys I went to school with work for the parish police now and seem to really enjoy it. A former coworker of mine does too.

I'm just ready for a change of some sort. I'm a crew leader where I'm at and I'm burnt out on the monotony of building fire trucks as a glorified, barely skilled laborer.

Thoughts? Suggestions? I welcome all comments.

Thanks

-Chris

I am ex Navy and was a Gunner. I would say go for it, the Coasties I dealt with were a cool bunch and enjoyed what they did. Eight weeks for boot is nothing, flies by.

I would suggest though that you pick a different rate than Gunner. Not really a huge demand for that type of skill set, outside law enforcement. You may want to think Fire Control.

Cheers
