Speed cameras

How EXACTLY do they work? They can take your plate picture in fog/rain/etc. Do they use an infrared system to take your license plate photo?

Specific technical details would be most appreciated.

Not implying I'm breaking the law or intend to circumvent them (radar speed cameras are actually banned in my state). I just have a bit of morbid curiosity on the subject

there are many different ones, the ones i installed used a digital camera with a very specific flash, to take advantage of the retroreflector aspect of most license plates. (they reflect light directly back to the source) the lights were mounted adjacent to the camera and aimed precisely at the typical plate level.

the software would digitize this image and save the "read" number instead of the actual image. (hughes missile systems targeting adaptation)

they were synchronized to road loops embedded in the asphalt to trigger the picture and calculate the speed.

i installed systems in Holland to catch speeders on the freeway south of Amsterdam.

the system paid for itself in speeding fines in one year!!! the project cost something like $3 mil in 96!!! a lot of tickets!!!

i also installed camera systems on the Bay area bridges, for toll control.

i was also part of the program that had these cameras set up in conjunction with laser smog equipment to identify gross polluters on freeway on ramps in CA and AZ. (SmogDog) interesting stuff.
