Break in question regarding engine braking

Hey I read the post by darin where he said " DO NOT down shift, not ever, not even once during the course of these runs for at least 250-300miles. I put the car in neutral and release all loads after the run but that me."

which is basically saying don't allow the engine to really brake the vehicle, but then I read the Break in Secrets website where it says;

"Remember that both hard acceleration and hard engine braking (deceleration) are equally important during the break in process."

which do you guys think is true

as i rule i would say don't ever use any engine as a brake during the entire time you ever have the engine running.

I believe it's up to the driver. I downshift in the 69, but if needed I can replace the clutch. Just consider brake shoe replacement is cheaper then clutch replacement.

Both of these statements are so wrong it's not even funny. People who have no mechanical knowledge of an engine should never try to give out advice. It's people like that this that gives out advise like "You should flush out your engine with water every time you change your oil."

To answer the op, yes you SHOULD do hard engine breaking when breaking in the engine. This is a critical component in the process and failure to do so WILL result in the rings not seating properly which WILL result in your engine burning more oil then normal and a loss of power.

When I broke my engine in, I did hard accelerations and hard engine braking. When I installed my catch can, I didn't get much oil blow by...so I guess I did it right?

well I spent a few hundred (400~) miles doing hard acceleration/engine braking Im really hoping I don't end up regretting not using a mineral oil for break in, I'm still doing some hard acceleration and engine braking when I can, but it is less frequent now

I drive it the way I plan to drive it for as long as I have it............ Like I stole it.

Of course my Camaro was broken in by driving it from Las Vegas to Delaware to visit family.

Just drive normal. I always suggest dino oil for break in.....but usually get flamed for doing so. Nothing wrong with a little frisky accelerating and engine breaking early on. If you are under 1k, you can still use the dino for break in. Either way, I'm sure you'll be fine. I broke mine in by driving 4700 miles across country with only 1500 miles on the clock..........a no-no by some folks standards. Still running dino in the pan too.............no leaks, no runs, no shimmys, no shakes, and no oil consuption. Just have fun!

And no warranty if something in the engine goes and the dealer notices.
