Epic Short Film Marriage Proposal costars 2011 Camaro

Hey everyone, I wanted to share with you the story of my life changing event. On Friday May 18th 2012 I proposed to my girlfriend Amy. I chose to propose to her via a short film played at a local bar that we frequent in Springfield MA. Since I love my 2011 Camaro so much, I had to have a cameo appearance in the film itself. Here are the details of the proposal as well as the the video itself.

The Proposal

Inception

The proposal was about a year in the making. I had seen a similar idea on Youtube last May where a couple got engaged in a movie theater. It was an exciting concept that I wanted to build off of and use as a basis for my proposal to Amy. Working closely with a friend of the family who co-owns Merritt Films, we quickly began brainstorming ideas. We started with Amy's TV interests around CSI Miami, Person of Interest and Hawaii 5-0 type themes. In addition to the theme I had also wanted to use my 2011 Chevrolet Camaro. Being an avid Camaro enthusiast, it had to be a part of this life changing event. We also decided to use a few key names that Amy would recognize as the characters names. Lucy and Milo are both of our cats names and the names of the first two characters shown on camera in the film.

So after the theme was decided upon, as well as the additional requests of having the Camaro and our pets names appear in the film, scripting began. The first script was presented near the end of October, and early November. With some emails back and forth between Merritt Films and myself, we settled on a final script near the beginning of December. Now came the time to think about where the Movie would be shown.

Choosing the Venue

Not wanting to hold it in a traditional movie theater we brainstormed a few locations. The initial viewing location where the proposal was going to take place was at a local AHL Hockey arena where my sister worked. but after attending a few games, it became clear this wasnt going to work. The film was becoming to long to fit in between periods as well as the elevated noise and distractions from the audience. So we decided to work with a local bar in Springfield who has been a huge supporter of the arts and weekly hot spot for my parents. The bar we used was Theodores located on Worthington street in Sprinfield Ma.

We chose to use this location as my parents knew the owner and staff, and it wouldn't be weird for Amy to see my parents there the night the proposal would take place.

Filming

With the holiday season approaching we held off on filming anything until the start of the new year. The first weekend of filming began on February 19th. We managed to shoot the car scenes as well as the woods scenes that entire day. The following weekend we shot the diner scene at Astros in Enfield. The final confrontation scene took place on March 19th outside of Theodores in Springfield as well as the entrance to Smiths pool hall next door.

The Ploy

Now that filming was completed it was time to work on how I was going to get Amy to show up at Theodores the night of the proposal. Springfield is not a usual destination for her and her friends to go, unless I am up that way. I needed to get her there without me being there. So I came up with a plan to have one of her friends "Win" a contest through a local Springfield radio station. Here is the letter used and sent to her friend. The letter was fake and created by myself. KIX 100.9 had no involvement in this made up contest and prize letter used. Her friend was in on the event so it was only used to get Amy and the rest of her friends out to the venue that night.

Shortly after the prize letter was mailed to her friend the final editing to the movie was completed. With everything set all we had to do now was chose the date. We had chosen to use May 18th as it was a Friday everyone was available to attend, and there weren't any local bands performing at Theodores until later that night.

The Big Night

On May 18th, the night finally came for the big showing. The girls weren't expected to show up to Theodore's until 7:30. I had arrived about an hour early to make sure all preparations were made. I was blown away by the amount of detail that Merritt Films went into in making this movie showing look authentic. They had promotional movie posters made up and posted across the bar as well as detailed "Reserved" seating cards made up with the films title for the "Contest Winners" as well as the "Producers" of the film. Everything was perfect. With 7:30 closing in closely I ducked out of the room and hung out until 8:00pm came. Instead of explaining the rest of the night. Here is the next 15 minutes as they played out at the bar.

Enjoy!
