marriage tax penalty

My wedding date will either be in Dec 2012 or Jan 2013.

Is there a ballpark combined income level where the marriage tax penalty kicks in?

Thanks!

More so related to dependents and write-offs.
If you're gonna be DINKs for a while with no mortgage, you'll pretty much have to
take comfort in the knowledge that you'll be contributing (way) more than your fair share.

Our first year, we had to pay an additional $5K more than what either of us had put in separately.
That was the in the mid 80s, btw. (that was about 1/2 of what we 'saved' for the future)

You'll spend so much on the wedding, the tax penalties will be the last thing on your mind How come no one ever gets the groom the two wedding presents he needs most: vaseline and a bottle of Jack?? I got more serving dishes than I know what to do with...

From what research I was able to find everything says it kicks in if one of two things happen;
- you both make roughly the same
- if the combined taxable income is about $100k

If your incomes are separated by a wide margin and you stay under that mark you should actually pay less then you would have if you filed separately.

The best way to find out is to use a tax return calculator and do them as single and do another one as married filed jointly and see what the difference is.

Not entirely true. I just got married back in AUG after the Fest, although I didn't get the Vaseline I did get a bottle of Jack! Well, 2 bottles. It is known that I only drink Jack and have several collector edition bottles so they were easy gifts for me. I am hoping that the taxes don't kill us as well, now that the wedding and all are over have been paid for.
