Ducati engine... does this make sense?

Explain to me how this makes sense (go to 15:57)

sequence starts with piston going downward… did they mess up the animation?

Considering how the first cycle of a piston on any engine is "suck" I don't see how.

They just didn't show what happens in an engine during that first stroke.

The engine is designed so that new air/fuel mix is actually pulled into the combustion chamber by negative pressure behind the exiting exhaust gasses which acts similarly to a turbo charger except instead of pushing in the front it pulls out the back.
That's all well and good for Ducati's race engines but it is simply too much for the street.
The bike they are talking about is the Multistrada (translates to many roads) which is designed as a go anywhere bike (pavement optional).
The design talked about in the video tones down the race engine for public roads and especially for the trail. You still have a very powerful engine with plenty of torque but the power delivery is much more manageable.

The 220 HP engine mentioned is for Ducati's MotoGP engine and not the testastretta engine in the Multistrada (which has about 150 HP).

But even at 150hp, put it on a 400lb bike and it is still a silly amount of power. For reference, my old Ducati 996 SBK (2001) only has about 120 horsepower and is insanely fast. I've been riding bikes my whole life and that thing is too powerful even for me.

They probably could have just said, the race motor's cam has a tighter LSA and more overlap than the street version. Ducati didn't really invent anything there. Everybody does that, except maybe the rotaries and two strokes that do the same thing through porting.

and now they are bringing out the new Super Quadro (over sqaure) engine (revised desmo valve train, chain driven cams etc). 195bhp from 1199cc... I'd love to have that engine in my Monster S4RS (currently 140whp) but it would be almost unmanageable without the accompanying electronics.

So you're a Honda fan then?

Seriously, I don't think they were claiming that it was anything original but were just explaining for the uninitiated how the engine is de-tuned for this bike.

Now, if Ducati had written the script for the video, who knows. Most Italians are seriously proud of their country's motosport engineering.

And yes, I'm a Ducatisti, but not the rabid variety. I just love twin cylinder engines and I think Ducs are gorgeous bikes.

OH... for anyone who is interested, Carlos Checa will begin defending his World Superbike Championship title this weekend.
