There's a Volt on my carport.

I was at the Chevy Store yesterday and mentioned I would like to drive a Volt just to see what it is like and they gave me the demo to use for a few days. It is really a neat car. It feels like a quality machine. I have driven it about 150 miles and averaged about 50 mph so far. On the downside it takes a long time to charge on 110 v and the batteries do not last as long as I thought they would.

I agree it is too high.

Here is a pic of it beside my Dad's 61 Bel Air. Things in the automotive world sure have changed alot in the last 50 years.

If the Volt was $21,995, GM would sell a bazillion of them.
Wait a few years, like all tech, price comes down as features and competition get better.

This. Although honestly, I'd rather see Diesel make a comeback. Europe has some 3 cylinders that get amazing economy off the stuff.

so whats the range your getting just off electricity?

On a side note, everytime I see this car, I think of how much of a failure it is.

Why you ask?!

Well Bob Lutz came out with a thousands promises with the Volt, hit hurdles with each statement. Car was never meant to be a hybrid, now GM uses their failure (hybrid vs full electric) as an excuse by comparing it other full electric cars and saying "well now you have a gas option just incase you run out of juice, not like the other competition"
I think thats sad, compare it to other hybrids, dont shoot other FULL electric cars range.
Anyways the design is great, sure its a hybri, thats great, just hate the false advertising.

The Volt wasn't all Lutz's fault.

I had one for a couple of days as well. It is designed to run the first 40 miles on electric only. That being said and factoring in the regenerative braking and what speeds you are doing etc, I was able to go 50 miles (mostly freeway at 70mph or so) before depleting the charge... The onboard gas engine is very quiet. The car has balls even when running battery only...

Still, it is too damn expensive. :(

It's the raw materials in the batteries that cost money...And I don't know if you've noticed, raw materials aren't coming down in price...
