I wonder if the owner drives this car around thinking he's cool...

I think people who do this are merely ignorant. They see these "R" labels on other cars, they think they mean something special, they see that their car doesn't have an "R" label and so they go put one on. And that's the end of the thought process.

Is that any different from Camaro V6 owners who put SS body parts on their car? Neither the "R" badge nor SS body parts are going to make their car go faster, but are arguably equally shallow and pretentious.

Sure some people will be upset by that, but you go challenge the guy with the "R" badge on their car, and their arguments will be exactly the same as those V6 owners who put SS body parts on their car.

badging and body panels are two different things.

No they're not. In the case of the V6 vs SS, it's purely an aesthetic difference - there is no functional difference; therefore it's the same as a badge just on a different scale.

Okay, the guy who changed the body part is faking it on a grander scale. Does that make you feel better?

Like I said, both the guy faking it with a badge and the guy faking it with body panels use the same argument. "It's my car blah blah". "Why should you care blah blah". "Me likes it that way blah blah".

Sure thing - and me thinks he'd be a fraud.

To a certain extent, I agree with rez. Now, I'm not going to call someone who puts an SS front end on a V6 a fraud, but I certainly wouldn't do it.

I would equate that to someone putting a GT500 body kit on their V6 Mustang. Yeah, it may look nicer, but it's a bit of false advertising, even if they haven't added any GT500 specific badging.

But the original post has nothing to do with the body panels of the car, anyway. The badges pasted onto that Civic (?) aren't even from Honda. That's where the real lame-ness comes from.

I don't think this debate will end any time soon...

I dont see anything wrong with taking say an old lemans, and making it into a gto clone, providing the engine and all are correct. I dont see anything wrong with upgrading body components if thats the look you like. Putting SS badges on a V6, SRT on a R/T, or shelby cobras on a GT, well thats all perpetrating IMO. Putting badges from other brands like the civic is completly ridiculous and makes the owner look like a moron.

I dunno, clones are a completely different category. Clones are created in the old muscle car market because there's a very limited number of the vehicle being cloned. For example, a numbers matching COPO Camaro can fetch astronomical numbers, wheras a COPO clone gives you the look for a fraction of the price.

When it comes to modern muscle cars, cloning seems silly because you could just go to your dealer and get an SS brand new at MSRP. Heck, you could get a low mileage used SS at an even better price. You don't need to clone one, because they're not "rare."
