Walk Now for Autism 2011

As some of you may know, my son Tanner was diagnosed with Autism just about 3 years ago now so this is a cause near and dear to my heart, obviously. For those unfamiliar with the disorder it can be a very big challenge, we are truly lucky that aside from basic developmental delays Tanner is still a very loving and sweet little guy. Hes still non-verbal and needs a great deal of assistance to accomplish even the most basic of tasks, but other families have it much worse than we do.

On November 12th this year, just 5 days after Tanner's 5th Birthday, we will be participating in the Orange County Walk Now for Autism. "Team Tanner" will be represented in full force with our entire family, all our friends, and even some of his teachers & ABA therapists who have been so important as he makes strides toward recovery.

Understanding that now, more than usual, money is tight for everyone I hesitate to even solicit donations. If you can donate, even a small amount, know that we truly appreciate it and your gesture and support. If you can't donate please share this info to raise awareness for the cause. The funds raised will go directly to Autism Speaks, the worlds largest Autism Awareness and Advocacy organization.

Leukemia: Affects 1 in 1,200 / Funding: $277 million
Muscular Dystrophy: Affects 1 in 100,000 / Funding: $162 million
Pediatric AIDS: Affects 1 in 300 / Funding: $394 million
Juvenile Diabetes: Affects 1 in 500 / Funding: $156 million
Autism: Affects 1 in 110 / Funding: $79 million

National Institutes of Health Funds Allocation...
Total 2010 NIH budget: $35.6 billion. Of this, only $218 million went directly to autism research. This represents 0.6% of total NIH funding for the year.
With such little funding allocated to the research and understanding of Autism its up to us; Parents, friends, family, etc. to do what we can to fund what we hope is the research that will find a solution.

I will see what I can do to get people from SoCal to join you on this, and if it wasn't so far away, I'd be there too.
