Why does ford not utilize 6gears as GM does?

Its seems i only hear good things about our camaro's 6gears better gas milelage... Would the mustang not profit from it as the camaro does? Even the gt500 and super mustangs "cobra. roush, shanoda,...shelby" only use 5gears?

ive always wondered the same thing.
The Fusion i drive could really use another gear, cruising at 120 km, the car is at about 2700 rpm, another gear could really make it more efficient

the mustang and the GT model are 5 speeds but the GT500 and GT500KR are 6 speeds, the Roush cars are 5 speeds but i do not know if the saleen cars are.

The GT probably uses the 5 speed for cost containment just like they stick with the live axle on them. Keeps the MSRP down.

I had a 2003 Mach 1 with the 4.6 4V and even though it was only rated at 305 HP her best 1/4 time stock was 13.26 @ 106.26 which was not too bad at the time.

03-04 Cobra's also came with a 6 speed.

6 speeds are WAY overrated, as long as 5th gear is geared properly, 6 gears are not needed.

The average Ford driver can't count that high.

But seriously - there's plenty of discussion on this. A lot of it's preference, cost etc. But, it's worth noting that a lot (!) of european cars have gone to 6 speeds long ago. Simple math shows that a 6 speed should be more fuel efficient. I've had mixed results with that though. The first new gen diesel we had with the Allison 6 speed trany got worse milage than the previous gen combo. But the 2008 diesel with the 6 gear allison gets amazing milage.

My 06 vette with 6 speed manual is turing 1700 RPM's @ 70 mph. That helps fuel economy. 30+ MPG in real world highway driving.

That's all I know.

why doesnt the camaro get 7 gears like some Audi, VW, and Infiniti cars? why dont we use 8 speed transmissions like BMW is now doing?

It's cause that's what Ford's been using forever and everyone keeps buying them so they probably figure....if it ain't broke why bother fixing it

For 2011 Ford is going to 6 speeds across the board. Along with the new engines.
