Question NYS inspection exhaust related

as you all know I have a 2004 Monte Carlo coupe. well my exhaust is fine except my resonator (whatever that does) has split along the seam where it was welded. the one muffler shop (which is also where I usually get my annual inspection) quoted me a price to get it replaced, but what I want to know is can I just remove it and replace it with a tube of the same type and diameter metal as long as I have the CAT and the muffler I should be okay? trying not to spend big money getting the thing ready for sale, I just want the car to pass the inspection for NY that is due this month.

You should be fine, the resonator is just a place for exhaust gasses to expand to change the pitch of the exhaust note.

Red face

yeah i talked to 2 different NY inspection places in town and they said as long as the cat and muffler are intact as well as the tubing that connects them are intact I will be fine. so I am going to an exhaust shop on friday (which it could have been done tomorrow the car is THAT loud) and having the bad resonator removed and replaced with a piece of same diameter exhaust tubing.
