Jump Titles

Would anyone consider buying a car with a "jump title"? How about one that is over over 2 years old?

I meet a guy on this site who lives near me. He had a sweet gen 4 super low milage SS Camaro for sale. After we agreed on a price, I found out that the title was not in his name! He bought the car over 2 years ago and never transferrd the title. The title is signed by the original seller and has been notrized, but the buyer section was never filled out.

I back-out and now he is upset, told me this is no big deal and he does it all the time. Problem is that I would need to fill the buyer section out and back date it as though I purchased the car over 2 years ago. I am not sure the BMV would buy any story as to why I have a MINT SS Camaro sitting in my garage w/o paying taxes, not having plates or insurance.

I know here in Ohio the laws are strict.

Any thoughts?

Done it before, just be polite and say u have been working on it and just got it running. Ate folks who do that though. I wont sell anything unless its fully done cause its still the original ownerscar till transfered. They could get in trouble for what he may have done cause its still their car on paper. I would make him go with you and not exchange money till they change the title. If nothing is fishy he shouldnt mind.

I don't know the laws in Ohio. Would you have to pay back titling fees or plate fees? Why did he not title in his name?

I have to pay a fee ($25) for failing to transfer the title within 90 days, plus I could be fined for not having plates or insurance (Ohio state law). Also, because the title is over 2 years old they may consider the title VIOD and re-issues a "new" title which means that the original owner would have to be involved. I found this out thru a friend who use to work for the BMV, he said "don't take the chance.....It's not worth the trouble, it's just a car." I agree.

He didn'ttransfer the car into his name because he wanted to increase his profit by not paying the taxes.

u dont have to have plates or ins on a car not drive... I do it yearly. not till summer do i get a new sticker or ins for my zzzzfirebird. [sticker expires every jan] the late fee is a new scam to get ya. its not a big deal. { i pat it yearly also for waiting to get my sticker, but plates are pro rated for months not used, which even out the price.]

only possible way to get hit for no plates or ins is if u use street parking. dmv has no rule on whats kept in your yard.

[unless its over 5-7 cars n then u need a dealers license]
