GoPro Hero is a mountable 1080p video recorder that does a very good job for in-car/helmet type shots. You could also carry it around and shoot video as well if you wanted.

Here's something I shot with mine a couple of weeks ago (Rattling is annoying, and I will won't be happening next time I record):

There's other handheld ones as well, but I haven't tested any in the $500 range. My shoulder mounted HD camera was around $1600.

Electronics are kinda easy in those ways to hunt down a deal.

As with every new gen, what was the best of the best is now not anymore and it trickles down.

Find the best one made 2-3 years ago and you know it will atleast perform well, if it was king of them for that year.

Id say th number 1 choice should be media, do you want it to be something that is easy to get onto your computer for editing or can pop into anyones home machine. [And media is often the technology change. ]

Id probably go after a DVD one that was top of its game for a said year.
