Why We Exist

Camaro5 is home to your Camaro discussions. If it weren't for us, you'd be talking to neighbors like this guy who just don't understand.

I'm glad you're all here, because no one else seems to understand my love of cars. This site has been a family to me. I want to thank you all for reading.

Discuss.

What a tool! I like what Steve said. "The noise is to let you know you need to get out of the way."

Wow
On the other hand, Steve and John both got there comments right. Some people will just never understand our need for music.

I love it when the uninformed try to write about stuff the don't understand without even attempting to do some research.

yeeeaaah.... there is a big difference between a loud car exhaust (which increases power by not restricting air flow) and stupid-loud Harley's and other motorcycles. We have bike night every third Friday (when the weather allows) in our town, and some of those bikers really are starting to get on my nerves. Example:

I was waiting for my fiance outside the chinese restaurant, dude on a chopper is coming up to the stop sign and just LAYS on the throttle as he's slowing down (just revving it to sound 'cool'). I had a very strong urge to throw my shoe at him and yell "NO ONE THINKS YOU'RE COOL, STFU!!!!"
It's very much like that South Park episode. I like the sound of a good exhaust, but completely removing the baffles on your chopper is an excessive cry for attention.

The sound of exhaust can be compared to various types of alcohol. Most cars fall into the 'beer' range. Its popular and consumed in huge volumes, but minimal difference across the board. Performance cars are like wines. Tons of varieties from every region of the world, each with its own distinctive flavour, and all with a bit more kick. After market exhausts are like spirits. Ricer fart cans are like vodka, mostly consumed by kids who don't know any better. V8 muscle cars are like whiskey, the choice of manly men. But the obnoxious Harleys? Moonshine. Somewhere, nobody is sure where, but somewhere it crossed the line from being 'more is better' to 'MOAR BECAUSE MOAR!!!1!!!'. Not surprisingly, there is a big overlap in our mental image of a moonshiner and a biker:

For all we know, those two are the same guy

Those who dance are considered insane by those who can't hear the music!

Egg-Zackery!

Some get a stiffy from the shriek 18,000 rpm F-1 engines...

Some go bonkers for the aural and physical concussion of a Top Fueler...

Some get weak in the knees for the basso profundo of a V8 muscle car...

Some wish for the whine of a DOHC V8/12 Italian exotic...

Some like Harley's blat...some like a 2-stroke's bleet...

A shriek and a concussion and a basso profundo and a whine and a blat and a bleet are ALL "noises", just as music is. What's "music" to one's ears, can easily be annoying noise to others... Rap vs. C&W vs. "Easy" Listening, which may NOT be so "easy"...

The engine sound is part of the experience. When you hear the engine making noises in tune with the vibrations you're feeling through the car, you just get excited. The more you hear the loud roar, the more excited you get.

Case and point. One day I randomly took a motorcycle safety course and got my class M license. I immediately bought a beater bike to practice on. Well this beater still did 0-60 in under 5 seconds and had one mean exhaust note at 10k+ RPM. I made a choice to get rid of it to help pay off some bills, but to this day because of my experiences with it, whenever I hear a street bike roll on the throttle, I get excited. Before, it did almost nothing for me. But after experiencing the thrill of it, the loud sounds make me excited and yearn for another bike.

This guy makes a lot of comments about how inexperienced he is with performance cars and how his limited experience includes looking at one or two parked. I am willing to bet you if he had any extended experience behind the wheel of a performance car, he'd be singing a different tune.

and is exactly why I never grow tired of my bikes (Ducati S4RS & Triumph Thruxton) and now the "beast" as it is referred to by my nephew...

The open airbox coupled with the Termignoni exhaust on the S4RS is simply intoxicating.... that bike makes me do very bad things!
