TORONTO POLICE LOSE ONE OF THEIR OWN.

It's a somber day in Toronto, Ontario as the city's police service loses a fellow officer in the line of duty.

Briefly, newly appointed Sgt. Russell, was attempting to apprehend a fellon, who was in possission of a stolen vehicle/plough, when he was run down. He was rushed to the trama unit at a downtown hospital, however, succumed to his injuries, moments later. The suspect was shot by police and rushed to the same hospital, and underwent emergency surgery.

I did not know him personally, however, every member of the service (uniform & civilian) is mourning his death. He was 35yrs old, leaves behind a wife and 2yr old son.

I know we have some fellow officers on this site, so I ask you, and everyone, as my extended family, to find it in your heart to say a prayer for him, and his family (home & beyond).

OP, thanks for posting this story and making light of this terrible loss. Its never a good thing to hear of the sensless loss of another "Brother" in the Line of Duty. Just another painful reminder of what may happen every time we "suit up". My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and co-workers. May punishment be swift and severe.

Thank you everyone, for your thoughts.

His funeral is Tuesday @ 1pm, and they're expecting about 10,000 officers to attend, North American wide.
Therefore, they're using the convention centre downtown to accomodate everyone.

Suspect was formally charged with 1st degree murder on Friday, and has been remanded in custody until his next court date on Friday January 21st.

He is still under police guard in hospital recovering from injuries.

I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of ALL members of the Toronto Police Service, to thank those police, fire & EMS services who attended Sgt. Russell's funeral today from our friends in the U.S.

I apologize in adavance if I miss anyone, but our thanks go out to the police services from Cleveland OH., Buffalo, & Brooklin NY, who came to show their respect to our fallen officer, and for his immediate & policing family.
